Blue Hills Traverse: Traverse

iansmith

1. +00:30I ran off to urinate behind a tree right before the start, and the mass start came at a most inconvenient time. By the time I passed the start triangle, I was about :30 back and everyone was out of sight.
2. +00:45Out of the first control, everyone split into two groups. I had glanced at my map, but I only knew the direction and distances to controls 2, 3, 4. I followed the Saegers. My pack quickly dissolved; no one in my vicinity had a good plan. I figured we had gone too far north, so I attacked south and hit the control.
3. Ran to the northern trail, attacked just north of the control. Got a bit stuck with some logs, but otherwise clean execution.
4. Ran on trail, attacked around the south of the pond. With a large group of about 8.
5. Started to get tired running on trail. I followed a group all the way on the trail, but I figured going south across the road directly would have been faster.
6. Ran on trail, but after the cliffs to the east, I contoured because I didn't want to descend only to reascend. I caught up with the trail runners at the control.
7. Ran on trail, cut a corner north of the little hill. I led a good group of people across the rocks, but my attack was up the gradient, while the group ran up the reentrant to my left. I punched in the middle of the group.
8. +01:00I couldn't keep up with the group of 10+ runners; I was slow throughout the leg. I ran to the trail, ran along it, then decided to cut some time by going over the hill. Unfortunately, I was too far north, hit the trail again, and attacked up the reentrant.
9. +00:30Slow running to the road.
10. +03:00At 9, I had a GU and retied my shoes. I ran up to the trail, then cut across the hill at the rocky ground. I should have either gone up the hill earlier or run to the road.
11. Ran to the road and compassed via the boulder. Encountered some people as I ran to 12.
12. Clean attack up the reentrant.
13. +01:30Bad route choice: ran up along the trail over 13. Added unnecessary climb, and then overshot the control.
14. +00:45Followed two guys. Sluggish up the hill and suboptimal route (below the buildings).
15. Down to the road, up the trail east of the marsh, across the marsh, up the hill.
16. One of my best legs; good attention to the map.
17. Unremarkable route choice, along the trail. Took a GU twenty meters short of the control only to find there was no water.
18. +02:00Ran along the trails, then ran into and followed JJ. I should have stuck to the trail the entire way; we got a bit disoriented until we found the reentrant. I ran into Ben Parson (my old nemesis) and was motivated.
19. +03:00Ran down the stream, across the trail, to the marsh. The flat terrain confused me, and I ended up wandering west to the trail. I reattacked and hit the control.
20. +01:00Crossed the rock wall due east directly and contoured around to the control. I was a bit sluggish moving through the green, and I overshot by about 30 meters while descending the hill. Otherwise, ok.
21. +01:00After pushing a bit too far west, I ran up to the trial and followed it to the intersection.
22. +00:45A long trail run, on which I ran into (and was initially passed by) Bob Lux. Overall, the leg was clean, but slow. Lux punched before me, as the snow sapped my enthusiasm. I should have attacked further south along the parking lot.
23. Bob Lux was in front of me, so I paced myself to hit the go control simultaneously with him.
F. Sprinted in, keeping with my goal and custom of having the fastest finish leg.
