Race Evaluation

Blue Hills Traverse: Traverse

Charlie

1. Had Erik in sight about halfway there. That's a major achievement.
2. Tripped on something and took a hard fall at the road. Route fairly straight.
3. Trail around to the right, cutting in at the saddle NE of control.
4. +01:00Trail w between the green areas, then left on trial after green, but lost it where it crossed the next one and got off to the right a bit. Found it from the trail beyond, with Jeff Schapiro
5. +01:00Bad route. Thought I was going E to the trail, but drifted behind Jeff and ended up going overland all the way. Extra climb and slow, but no problem finding it.
6. Left control SE instead of S and missed the turn. Had to climb to get back to the trail around to the left. Then trail all the way around attacking from below, behind Sam Levitin.
7. Trail S, attacking from westward bend in the trail W of the green marsh and up the reentrant. Pretty satisfying leg. I think Sam L must have taken a different route, because all of a sudden he wasn't behind any more.
8. W up the N side of reentrant to trail, Then angling up, crossing stone walls and over the spur, around the cliffs and in. Slow but accurate.
9. NW to road then along road until marsh. Saw PG leaving control and heading up hill. That was a surprise.
10. Up to the trail then right for a bit, cutting across northern flank of hill. Closing on PG on the uphill, but then he was gone once I got to the top. Drifted a bit too far right and saw the road, so left on trail back uphill and in. Saw PG leaving control as I left the trail.
11. +01:00Slow going W to the trail, then trail and road to the corner and along spur. Misread the intricate area and got a little past it, seeing the boulders before heading back. I had been too low.
12. +01:00Much too tiny for me to see, and I was pretty scared going in there. I've been lost in here before. In on compass and stood around for a while, finally seeing the control off to my left.
13. lower trail to bend, and then contour. I was a little afraid of this one, too, but it was easy.
14. Slow going W to yellow area, then up above fence and across knoll and right in. Not sure why it took so long.
15. Up and over. Caught up to Russian guy Dancho Hristov who was right next to the control but then wandered S a bit. Punched quickly and got out of there.
16. Straight, and could read the contours well here.
17. +04:30N to trail and then across stream, and got the bright idea of cutting the corner, but didn't see the hill and thought maybe I'd gone too far. Saw Dancho on the trail and asked him if he got 17. He nodded and so I went back down the trail all the way to the jct. Darn! Heading back I saw him coming back, very apologetic for his poor English and pointing to the hill the control was on. Nice guy.
18. Not a great route. Down the spur and up the reentrant to the N to the trail and then the small trail up and over and in by the marsh. Saw Dancho heading toward 18 as I went up the reentrant.
19. More or less straight, and looking for the trail jct. I was just a bit right of it, and took the trail across the marsh and in, where I saw Dancho coming back at me, but I was by him before I realized he was relocating. It was just a bit further and a line up the hill.
20. E to trail, then lower trail around under the stonewall, which I never saw, to the trail junction. Trail up to the start of the cliffs and then up above the cliffs and right into it. Spike! Dancho right behind at the end.
21. Slow slow slow up the hill to the trail, then trail seemed to take forever. I was starting to panic, as I thought I might have passed it. Dancho caught and passed me as I finally got to the cross trail, then in along the right side top of the reentrant and right to it.
22. Back out and trail NW. Resolved to run all the way around. Perhaps not best. Seems like cutting the corner near the water tower would have saved a couple of minutes. Ran the trail all the way to just above the parking lot, then cut across and up around the fence and in from the snowy bunny hill.
23. Gingerly down the hill. Slippery.
