Race Evaluation

2008 Laramie Daze & US Champs: Blue 1

1. Knowing it always takes me a while to figure out where I am on the map, I let Sandra run ahead to the first control so that I could figure out where to run next by the time I got there.
2. +00:20I believe I had placed a control here while studying the old map before the event. Not that it helped. I stayed in the clearing for as long as possible, passing just to the right of the hill with the eastern cliff, but after going through the aspen I had no plan of attack. I ended up relocating on the hill due W of the control and didn't lose too much time.
3. A good leg, I think. I ran straight and used the clearings to attack.
4. +00:15Stayed slightly right to avoid climb, then steered towards the main reeantrant. I should have stayed on the spur and used the clearing to attack - a slight route choice mistake.
5. Straight, using the small hill in the clearing, and the reenttrant behind it to guide me towards the right hill.
6. Went left of the aspen and followed the aspen boundary. Might have been better to run straight.
7. Easy leg, just graze the aspen and spike. I almost collide with Rex on the way out because the guy checking my card is standing too close to the control.
8. +00:10I swing left so I can see the big clearing to my left. Rex picks a straighter route.
9. Through the dry lake, being a bit apprehensive about the possibility of twisting an ankle.
10. +00:02Again an easy leg as the feature is clearly visible from far away. I run around the wrong side of it though (right) and lose a couple of seconds.
11. Straight, reading the map well and knowing exactly what to look for.
12. +00:05The terrain guides me to the right of the aspen, which is not the best route. I zag back to swing clear of the rock features.
13. +01:20Through the marsh and into the clearing. Even though I can see the rocks ahead, I become suspicious of how the vegetation is sticking out about half way down the clearing, and climb up to the dot knoll where there is another control. I then swing back in a circle before I'm sure of my mistake. Rex has passed me again.
14. +00:10I stay left so I can see the clearing. Rex picks a straighter route.
15. Straight, using the boulder clusters en route to navigate.
16. +00:15I aim too far right and almost end up on the two dot knolls. I'm probably paying a bit too much attention to Rex and how much I want to get away from him.
17. +00:05I head off too far to the south, but realize my mistake when I hit the clearing. I aim for the bigger clearing, but stay a bit to the right of it to avoid an unecessary zag.
18. +00:25I should have realized that the hill/spur is the only useful attack point, but instead swing left towards the nice, big features that are of course not on the map. I make sure to correct as we get closer to the reentrant, and avert total disaster.
19. The rough open is a pain in the ass, and on the next few controls I am severely penalized for not training more in the terrain. I don't remember exactly how I find this control, but I suspect it involved spotting the main reentrant and staying to the right of it.
20. +00:30I cannot quite figure out the rock features as I'm getting close to the main climb, and climb up on the right side of the cliff to the E of the control. When I don't find the control behind it I immediately know where I am, and finding it from there is easy. I guess I wanted to avoid hitting to the right and having to backtrack, which would have been a bigger mistake.
21. +00:45I drop a bit too early by the boulder cluster just left of the line, and end up below the control. I should have stayed on the spur until finding the bare rock.
22. +00:20The rock features are a bit cofusing, and I don't read the map well enough to get to the bag in an efficient manner.
23. I stay on the line and see the aspen to my left before starting to climb back up. I sacrifice some altitude, but the navigation is easy.
24. +00:15I plan going straight, but stupidly try to avoid a few meters of climb by going right of the main hill. The aspen is really nasty, and I'm forced to climb almost to the top. I make sure not to miss to the left, which is easily done since the spur is vague at first.
25. Straight, using the trail and the rough open to aid my compass navigation.
26. +00:10I'm a bit confused as the 'bare rock' is more of a pillar. The hesitation costs me a few seconds.
27. I curve slightly to the right of the first hill, then use the aspen / spur to check my bearing.
F. For some reason the streamers are pointing towards the road. Why would people be coming from the road?
