1. | Trail S to first stone wall, then on contour through the nasty barberry. People who went along the road saved a minute.
2. | Contour to trail, trail up to terrace then S to control.
3. | Generally S, looking for boulder cluster
4. | Generally W, until I saw streambend. Kind of slow reading the map.
5. | Over the hill to the N-S stonewall, then along wall to control
6. | Crossed stream at bridge near yellow open area, but then had to cross back. Steve Fluegel up ahead.
7. | +02:00 | Plan was N left of marsh and then uphill generally to the road, but got confused in all the barberry and headed kind of SE, and eventually around yellow area and to the road. Then lost a bit at the control when I went right by the feature.
8. | +00:30 | To the road and then to the stonewall rectangle, thinking that would be where the control was. Looked at it for a while before seeing the smaller ruin to the W. Not sure what was going on there, as I didn't see that ruin on the map.
9. | Angle to trail, then left it at bend to follow wall. Surprised to see the flag had been moved back to original intended location.
10. | +00:30 | On compass, generally, passing the stone wall fragment halfway, and the small knoll just beyond that. Thought I had found it when I saw a knoll just before the right one, and had to hunt just a bit.
11. | Slow through the marsh and the barberry, drifting a little left to get around the worst of it, then could see the flag from quite a distance.
12. | Just a slog uphill | ||||||
13. | NW to trail to jct, then R of marsh to wall end and in on compass. Saw Rick DeWitt on his way from 13 to 14 up ahead.
14. | On compass over the rise and then could see the flag.
15. | Another slog on compass. Could see Rick and Susie up ahead which helped a bit.
16. | Contour around the hill behind R & S. They drifted lower to a control on the trail, and I saw others coming uphill that way too. Just had to stay with it. Not far behind Jeff Schapiro.
17. | Trying to keep up a good pace on trail going down steep hill. Slowed at a couple of places that just seemed to dangerous. Passed Jeff when he stopped to check a code on a bag too soon.
F. | Mad sprint to the finish, just holding off Jeff, who crashed at the line. |
