Possum Trot Weekend: Woodridge Park Long

steveng

1. East along trail, then cut in from the SW as the woods looked pretty open. Managed to get a bit entangled in one place though.
2. Along the field edge almost to the bend, then into the woods and down the re-entrant.
3. NE through the open woods, and in between the thickets. Meant to go west around all of them, but apparently didn't come out to the field quite where I expected. Didn't realize this at the time and was surprised to see the control when I did, since I thought I was rounding the westernmost thicket.
4. South, by both thickets, then east.
5. Between the light green and white, to the trail, and in from the south. Didn't notice the wall on the map. Didn't matter but it's something I shouldn't have overlooked. Caught Pete Curtis (by 1 min) at the control.
6. Straight, behind Pete.
7. +00:10Chasing Pete, not paying quite enough attention and came out to the field to the south, not the north one as planned. Passed Pete in the field, and cut in from the SW.
8. +00:50Planned to cut through the narrow part of the dark green, but apparently forgot this and decided to run along the vegetation boundary in the field (was better running there I think). When I neared the green, I realized that I needed to angle west to hit it at the narrow part. I was too close to the green for crossing at the narrowest place to be worthwhile, so I planned to head NW through the green and come out somewhere SSW of #8. But I drifted off course and came to the field SSE of the control. Didn't check my compass and just turned to the right, and ran almost to the eastern tip of the dark green before correcting.
9. Behind Pete again due to my mistake, slowly catching back up. Calves were beginning to feel a little sore, but that soreness went away quickly. Spotted the control a couple steps after entering the woods, and got there before Pete.
10. Went out to the field. Thought that would be a good bit faster than the forest, but Pete stayed in the forest and lost only a few seconds to me.
11. Straight, might have angled a little further south than necessary in the beginning. Pulling away from Pete.
12. +00:15Plan was to pass by/near #6, and go along the west side of the last three fields, but I got off course in the second field and ended up going up #7 instead. Not sure if that really did cost any time. Feeling fairly good in the first part of the leg, then bit slow and unable to speed up in the last two fields.
13. About as fast as I could reasonably go along the trail, but that pace seemed a bit slow.
F. Cruised in, no energy for a sprint.
