Race Evaluation

BOK/US Team Umstead 007: Red M

Nadim

1. Around the green and in but I stopped about 15ft. away and couldn't see it tucked away in the ditch.
2. I paused taking the road looking for the ride.
3. +00:30I went wide left to avoid the green and paused early. I realized it when it wasn't in the reentrant I thought it'd be but probably did lose some time.
4. +02:00I did a 180 leaving the control. After that I went too low to use the trail. I climbed but once there, I should have just stayed lower.
5. +03:30With control #9 on the way to #5, I got confused on the run. I climbed an extra hill and coming off the saddle of it, I thought I was much further ahead. This lost me more time before figuring it out. Once to the correct saddle for my attack point, I could see Andras Revesz only a few steps ahead.
6. +00:20I chased Andras there going mostly straight. We were off by one gully to the left. Andras figured this out before me.
7. We went along the edge of the ridge. Andras was hugging the edge too close and stopped short. I realized it and got ahead by staying left around the deadfall.
8. +00:05Taking off, I was headed for #9. I didn't see #8 which was on the way. Fortunately, Andres was running just to my right and did stop, cluing me in.
9. Down to the bottom, then up the ridge to the trail. We left from a trail bend chasing another orienteer. Andras found it first while the other orienteer was off higher to the left.
10. +00:15Andras planned his route before I did so I was in chase mode. I struggled getting up to the cabins that I'd passed on the way to #4. Looking ahead, the course seemed only half way done and this wasn't good news. Leaving the road. We crossed the reentrant. I lost sight of Andras in the green for a bit but he got confused on the other side. I saw a cairn, saw the side reentrant and knew where I was, I ran right to it tripping as I did. Andras and another orienteer saw me and were right behind.
11. +00:15I lead Andras away from #10 but to get around downfall, I zig-zagged more than he. By the time we crossed the campground, he got ahead. Acrosss the next reentrant, I was a bit left and too high. Andras was right on and got ahead 15-20 seconds.
12. +00:10I ran down in the valley and having read it wrong, I expected the short leg control to be at the end of the reentrant. Andras made this error too. He reached the end ahead of me and was perplexed before coming back higher up. A quick glance at the map again let me correct earlier and nearly catch-up.
13. Through the green straight, I lost track of Andras. I saw him on the other side of the road briefly, then no more. I hit the control fairly well but didn't see it till late with it tucked low behind the downfall. Other orienteers were hunting. I took the time to drink and have a Gu.
14. +00:20Andras had chosen a route going left around both rentrants. I went straigh across the first but did angle around the second. I lost about 30 seconds to him as I was walking up the first. He was probably running better than I at this point anyway.
15. I started feeling better either because I wasn't struggling to keep up with Andras or because the Gu was kicking in. I went a little left around the green.
16. +01:15I started straight on this, the was worried about going too low and out-of-bounds. I went higher and through the green, then bailed higher yet to the trail. After a few steps on it, I went back down and right to the control.
17. Up the left side of the reentrant until I saw the dot knoll. The control was fairly well hidden.
18. +00:30I crossed the reentrant a bit off line and ended up too high. I was tired. Seeing some cairns, I took a good guess to go down a bit and saw it.
19. +00:40Aiming straight, I somewhat ignored the trails. I crossed the reentrant in the nicer woods and saw a control. I knew it not to be mine but got close enough to make sure before passing it. Realizing I was too far, I turned around and climbed the ridgeline to the control.
20. I went fairly straight, using the field but staying high past it. Near the end there seemed to be an animal track or an orienteer track to the big pit.
F. I pushed a bit on the windy path. I kept wondering where the finish was.
