Orienteering 52:03 [3] 6.49 km (8:01 / km) +155m 7:10 / km

British Orienteering Championships, Relay

That was pretty awful. Probably the worst run I've had since returning from the knee injury last year.

First thing to say. Don't wear a magnetic bracelet on the same hand as your compass- main reason for the hesitancy and the poor bearing to first control, but figured it out pretty quick. It's a shame, because I think mentally I was in good shape to have a decent, fast leg and was feeling some speed over the terrain. After this I cracked a bit, stopped planning ahead and started rushing.

Had a tragic leg to 3, where I had no plan and took a bearing that I'm fairly sure was partially affected by the magnet in my pocket, because it was wayyyy too far north. After some running around I found it by luck more than skill, and then overshot 4, which I think is because I was still used to the 1:15,000 mapping from the day before. Too far down the hill to 5, and because I didn't aim off to the path I didn't know whether the control was above or below me; incorrectly guessed below. By this point I was realizing that a good run was now out of the picture and I lost my fast running and was back to just being a steady unhappy plod.

Interesting to note here, every control I was falling downhill from my bearing. Will have to bear (haha) that in mind.

Too far left to 7, didn't have the strength to push through the thick skog to 8 quick. Bit right on 9. Small mistakes but enough to keep you unsteady. On 10 I think I either didn't trust my bearing or it was wrong, and ended up way too far right before getting my paths confused for a hefty hesitation. Still up to this point I had seen nobody on Men's premier and I thought I was fucked and letting the team down.

On 11 I ran back past my #4 from yesterday, running past a very obvious fence (where the hell was that bastard yesterday when I needed it??), and crossed the path. Apparently I did so one stream too far north from where I thought, so after slogging through the green I ended up too far north thinking I was south and ran north again, having to come back on myself.

12 I ran past the first line of knolls and then had to relocate off the easternmost knoll and in. Running without any attack point or plan again, as ever mistake seemed to just screw up any forward planning and lead to attempted banter legs each time. Hit 13 well, pretty much the only control on the course I was happy with (the only other one being #2.), and then on 14 got overtaken by Fiona Bunn winning women's premier and cba to push and try to stick with her. I could have done the run in faster, but the girls were right ahead of me and they needed space to celebrate (also cba).

In the end, didn't matter too much. Adam Barrie was 13 mins ahead of me, so without a pretty good run he would have got me, and Adam Conway was still 5 mins behind. Could have made another few mistakes and still been 9th, and could have had a great run and still been 9th. So in the end it never mattered at all, and hopefully the worst run in at least a year is forgotten.
