PNW O-Fest NRE 1 at Fisk State Park by Cascade OC. Brown set for 2.3 km on a 1:4000 map. C1 was a compass leg across open with scattered trees for about 250 m. Compass + green patches worked pretty well. Got into the Rock City at C3 where I climbed on top the S rock but should have gone through the passage/reentrant. Followed green passage to C4 and went by feel to C5 to get away from another brown runner and was fortunate to find it. C6 to C10 were fairly straightforward. Went too far E for C11 and came back on it. C12 and C13 were good then followed the elephant track through the green W from C13, then past C9 to easy scramble to C14. Rest was good. This was such a fun course! I'm glad I was slower - it gave me more time in the beautiful woods.

Swam twice across the inlet at the swimming area at Fisk State. Gorgeous day to be in the water and enjoy the sun.

First day of the Pacific Northwest O-Fest: Warm-up at Fishtrap Lake, short advanced course set at 3.8 km. This map is almost entirely open land with bands of cliffs, often sheltering white woods, small (2.5 m) hills, and trails that are sometimes difficult to see in the terrain. I started out well to C4 which would have been better approached from below. The white woods between C4 and C5 were fairly difficult to get through with fire downfall. I ended up going N of the lake between C5 and C6 and then climbed to the plateau and had to get back down S of the marsh. I completely messed up C7, repeatedly trying to figure out the cliff bands, marshes and flat areas. Came across C2 and followed the trail S then SE but still didn't get far enough S to C7. Started to bail then saw a band of cliffs that I imagined looked like that at C7 and even found a control but it was on the wrong feature so I really bailed, still having no idea where I was until I saw the tent at the pre-start, which was almost 1 km from C7! Walked in on the trail. It was a fun course until C7 and unlike anything we have in the midwest.

Part of model map hike at the Cove at Fisk State Park. This is a city of rocks with up to 20 m cliffs, lots of bare rock, boulders and passageways between rocks. Cool map and I'm glad I saw the model so I don't need to figure it all out during the races.
