Please RSVP- -we'll need to know how many maps to print and how much food to get

For the orienteering event, we'll have the third annual World Phone-O Championships. The
format will be basically the same as the past two years, i.e., we'll have 2 courses, about 2.5 km
each, on the Bald Rock map, starting and finishing from our house. The usual setup (though you
can modify this as you wish) is to team up with someone. For the first course, one person is the
runner who goes to all the controls but has no map. The other person is the navigator who has the
map and, using a cell phone, describes to the runner how to get to each control. Then for the
second course the team members switch roles, i.e., the runner becomes the navigator and vice
versa. However, if someone wants to perform only one role, that's fine too. For example, you
may not feel like running so you could just be a navigator. Or you might bring someone who isn't
an orienteer/map reader, but is happy to jog/walk/run around the course. That person could just
be a runner. Alternatively, you could just run one or both courses as a standard course (but you'll
miss most of the fun and challenge of the cell phone course).

Some additional details:

Please plan on being ready to start a course at about 2 pm, especially if you plan on
participating in both courses. We will stagger starts by a minute or two but we'll want to get
people started as soon as possible so we can begin the meeting at about 4 pm.

Navigators will be given maps a few minutes before their runners start so they can look
over the courses.

If you don't have a cell phone, we can probably loan you ours. The area has good cell
phone coverage.

Ideally, you should figure out who you want to partner with before the event and arrive at
about the same time. If you don't have a partner lined up, we'll try to find you one once you
arrive. You can use the list of people we're sending this email to as a resource for who else might
be coming.

If you want to team up with someone who won't be here, that's fine. E.g., last year my
nephew in Seattle navigated Susie, and may do the same this year. If you do this, let us know in
advance so we can get the map(s) to the person.

We will have e-punching.

For results, we'll have a category for a team's combined time on both courses and for
each course. We may have other categories depending on how things fall together.
