Two days in the Dragoon Mountains! Mtn. Bike O, Night O, Day O (classic courses), camping, climbing, etc. On the equinox, Keith McLeod and Mark Parsons will host two days of fun "on the rocks" in the Cochise Stronghold, by permit on the Coronado National Forest.
Saturday's event will be a 10K Mountain Bike O (foot option). At 4400-foot elevation it is typically a sunny seventy-five degree day with a night low in the forties. We always have a big fire and barbeque and pot-luck. Last year we had a snow squall in the late afternoon and this year we will have fun night orienteering after the pig-out.
This country is a fast and flattish grassland with oak and mesquite, mostly in thicket. There are numerous cliffs, boulders, and mega-boulders and a dramatic 800-meter cliff for a backdrop. This area features very little of the certainly to be avoided cholla, plentiful around Tucson, but features shin-daggers, so bring gaiters for the advanced courses.
Sunday we will have white through red courses of classic style orienteering.
This will be our 19th year in arguably our prettiest area. Great camping, hiking, climbing, bouldering and orienteering! Two hours' drive out of Tucson, 30 minutes from Tombstone (lots of cheap motel rooms and a new Holiday Inn). Y'all come!
