Course Notes - Sat Feb 1, Dewey Mountain

Dewey Mt. Recreational Center is situated on Rte. 3, just west of downtown Saranac Lake.

First Start: 12:30 pm
SI timing will be used; AIR+ timing will not be in use. Timing chips will be available for a small rental fee. All pre-registered racers will have pre-assigned start times; however there will be a punch start. Maps will be distributed immediately after competitor has punched the start control. There is no course time limit but courses will close at 3 pm.

This is a relatively small venue so there will be many controls in a confined area; make sure the number of the control you are punching matches the one designated on your map!

Due to the small area and course layout, warming up on skis may be done ONLY in the field adjacent to the lodge.  Ask for directions. You may choose to run around the parking lot and/or down nearby streets.

Courses
Introductory 1.4 km - 5 controls
Short 2.4 km - 10 controls
Medium 3.9 km - 12 controls
Long 5.3 km - 18 controls

The Medium and Long courses will use a 2-sided map. When you reach the last control on the first side, flip your map over; the last control on Side 1 will be repeated and the controls will continue from there in sequential order.

You may ski in either direction on the trails regardless of the trail signs but be alert for oncoming traffic when you are going the "wrong" way. There will be many recreational skiers on the trails; some will be inexperienced who may not realize you are racing so don’t expect them to automatically yield to you. Please give as much warning as possible when overtaking and yield to downhill skiers.

Due to recent mild weather, ski conditions are marginal. Rock skis are recommended.  You may elect to take off your skis at times to hike down slopes or to navigate narrower snow shoe trails. Skiers removing their skis must have their skis and poles with them at all times (ie in their hands). Skis may not be stashed, even temporarily, and picked up later. This is according to international ski orienteering rules, and failure to abide by it is grounds for disqualification!

Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, male and female, in all recognized age groups on both Saturday and Sunday. Skiers may race in different age classes each day providing they meet the criteria for each class.

The weather forecast for Saturday is pleasant and we look forward to some great racing!

Course Notes - Sun Feb 2, Paul Smith's VIC

The VIC is located at 8023 State Route 30, Paul Smiths, NY 12970.

First Start: 11:30 am

Warming up on skis may be done only in the open area adjacent to the back of the main building, within sight of the start triangle. Please do not ski onto any trails. You may run on the roads around the building.

Short 4.0 km - 11 controls
Medium 5.7 km - 12 controls
Long 10.8 km - 18 controls

The VIC is a popular nature center with over 50 km of ski and snowshoe trails. This past autumn, several kilometres of international standard racing trails were added at the west end of the map. You will find trails of various widths designated on the map; skaters are advised to consider the width of trail before deciding on their route. Grooming conditions change daily and you may find a particular trail is wider than mapped; trails will rarely if ever be narrower than mapped. Snowshoe trails may not be packed but are accessible. You may notice unmapped trails of animals and wayward skiers; please check your map carefully if you choose to use these.

There is a student logging operation going on in the southeast corner of the map. It is well marked as out of bounds both on the map and on the ground – please observe this for your own safety.

There is a major marsh – Heron Marsh – on the map; if you choose you cross it you MUST use the designated marked trail for safety reasons.

There are a few one-way marked trails at the VIC; you may ski in either direction on ALL trails but always be alert for oncoming traffic.
