Jukola relay is one of the biggest orienteering contests in the world. There are 14,000 - 15,000 partisipants every year. About 1,000 teams in the Venla relay and 1,500 Jukola teams take part to the competition every year. The relay has become more and more international during the last years. The proportion of the international teams is about 20 %. The majority of the foreign teams come from Sweden and Norway. The competition centre gathers totally a crowd of 30,000 - 40,000 people. Among them, one can distinguish orienteers, trainers, media, family members and the audience. When we add another 1,200-1,500 organizers, you can imagine how massive organization is needed to arrange this event. Most people spend the whole night in the competition centre, in and outside of the thousands of tents.

Kytäjä Jukola 2010 will be a challenging orienteering race. Time differences between the top teams will be big. An average mistake will be bigger in this terrain than in other terrains. The competition terrain is wilderness which is partly divided by forest roads. The terrain consists mainly of steep hills which alternate with marshy dells. There are almost no paths in the terrain instead there are few forest roads and ski tracks which make running easier. Lots of forestry have been made in the terrain in the 70s and 80s. These areas are now in a good shape for orienteering, however, kilometer paces will be slower this year than in other Jukola relays in the 21th century.
