Meet notes:

EMPO’s final regular event of the Spring season will take place this Saturday (May 20), on our “Pleasant Valley Farms” map. That’s the updated and expanded version of our former “Norray Farm” map. The Start window is delayed/shortened because it is turkey hunting season (which ends at noon): 12:30-2:00. Because daylight is lasting longer now, we will still allow the usual 3-hour maximum time for completing (or not) any course.

There will be [UPDATE] 4* courses available; preliminary data:

*Combined White/Yellow -- 2.1, 10 controls

Orange – 3.8k, 8 controls
Green – 4.9k, 10 controls
Red – 6.5k, 12 controls

A couple of notes:

In the past, this area has been somewhat wet in the Spring, and I expect that to be true this year.

Most courses will at times cross some fields shown as either “rough open” (buff yellow) or “cultivated” (yellow with black dots). It is impossible to know in advance how these areas may have been mowed or plowed, so be prepared to deal with some variances.

General things:

It could be rather buggy, so prepare with repellant. We’ll have some on site if you forget.

This year is apparently another tick resurgent season (too many acorns last fall), so be sure to do tick checks post-event.

We will reprise all of the courses on Wednesday, May 24. This is being offered as part of “World Orienteering Day”. The intended audience for this event is scholastics/juniors (High School and under), as a way to expand orienteering’s base. But, if we’re going to have it, we figured we might as well invite everyone. So, if you want to come on Wednesday, you can, but you must pre-register for Wednesday. The Start window is somewhat flexible depending upon when any schools/groups can make it. But if you want to attend you should include your preferred start time range in your registration. Finally, I’ll make one more plea to any of our members to consider directing a final Spring season event in June, on any of our maps of your choice. --PHT
