All the best for the weekend.

Go nice and careful with the first couple of controls. You want to spike those early controls to gain confidence and then you can speed up when you have settled into the map. Going slow to the first control is always a good opportunity to note features on the map. What has the mapper mapped?

Have a plan for every leg. What is my attack point? What is my route choice to the attack point? Which direction will I be exiting? Check those control numbers!

Control flow....have an idea of your exit before you get to the control if you can. But 95% of your concentration must be on the present leg. Don't spend so much time route planning the next leg and forget where you are.

Simplify!! This is mainly for the middle distance.
You don't need to identify every rock! Group them, or pick the obvious large rock-cliff as an attack point, or something else that is not a rock. You could even plan your approach to the feature from the side the control is located.

Exit with the right bearing for short legs.

For the long course, maintain contact!!! There are numerous gullies and spurs, and you must keep tabs of where you are or you won't know which gully/ spur you are approaching. Count them off. It will be easy to loose contact and we don't want to practice relocation even though I know you have done it at Toohey Forest......
Be careful going up and over a ridge. Take a good bearing from your last feature so you can accurately get to the next feature on the other side. Be really careful so you can be sure you are following the correct gully or ridge.

Stop if you need to and look around. You can 'save' time being careful.
Traffic lighting. Run fast when you know where you are going and slow down when you need to read detail.

Work to maintain focus till the end. Concentrate on your own course and plan for each leg.

Geoff tells me often that we will make mistakes, but relocate, put it behind you and keep going. Others will make them too.

See you tomorrow!
