There are 10 days left before the regular registration period for NAOC2014 ends (Aug. 31st). For those of you that may not yet have made up your minds about whether or not you plan on going we'd like to go over the 10 reasons why we think it's an event every North American orienteer should be there in October.

10. These sweet limited edition Trimtex NAOC2014 orienteering shirts.

Rather than offer just another technical running shirt from a race we have chosen to do things a little differently. Instead we have 250 limited edition high quality orienteering shirts available for sale on a first come first serve basis. We will let you know as soon as they are available for pre-order.

9. Regular Attackpoint readers will have seen this photo before:

In perhaps a first for North American orienteering the sprint race will be run on closed streets through a downtown business district. That means the sprint will involve three distinct pieces of terrain: Arnprior's downtown core, Robert Simpson Park's open park spaces, and the fast open forest of Gillie's Grove. You'll have to stay on your toes and be prepared to change orienteering technique quickly and regularly to do well in the NAOC sprint!

8. The Carp Ridge.

Some of you have run on the Carp Ridge at the Canadian Champs in 2010 or the Ontario Champs in 2011 and it's just getting better. We have greatly expanded the existing map with new LiDAR base data which will be used for both the middle and the long distance races. Super technical orienteering. Super fun orienteering.

We missed posting yesterday so here are two reasons to come today:

7. Watching and cheering on you national team as they strive for the Bjorn Kjellstrom and Future Champions cups. We are planning on making it very easy to follow along with good announcing, live results, and an excellent arena setup to watch the races unfold.

6. Between cheering your head off for your national team athletes you can help your club fight for it's own cup. New this year the People's Cup is a competition between clubs for depth of talent and participation. The more club members you have at the event the better you will be able to do.

5. Opening Ceremonies

Is this a first for orienteering in North America? In our attempts to raise the bar at the North American Champs and with the steady help of Arnprior we feel a regional champs like this should have start with a bit fun before dinner on Friday. Join us for some local talent and music in, where else, the main hockey rink at the Nick Smith Centre at 6:00 on Friday to start your weekend off right.

Sorry for the lack of photo.

Is this a first for orienteering in North America?

We had an "Opening Ceremonies" listed on the schedule at IS/IC 2012 (aka O, FTW!). Since we had a lot of people staying in an "Athletes' Village", we just called the Friday night dinner + mixer the Opening Ceremonies to make it sound more Olympian (bonus views of the Olympic Mountains from the site).

Nothing like what you guys will have, though.

We're in the final 3. I particularly like this reason: our just released NAOC2014 theme song "Take Control"!

Have a listen here: https://soundcloud.com/orienteers/take-control-nao.... I have no doubt that everyone will be signing along by the end of the NAOC2014 weekend. I already hum along whenever I play it (which is surprisingly often.

The song is by a local band called Orienteers who agreed to create a theme song for us free of charge so we'd love it if you could listen to some of their stuff on soundcloud and head over to their facebook page and give them a like.

Wow, I kinda expected this to be horrible. And it's the opposite of that!

2. This amazing woman is in charge:

Anne Teutsch is fresh off of open heart surgery in March and yet that has hardly slowed her down at all and she's already looking forward to getting back into shape for the next NAOCs. As she likes to remind us, her surgeon says her blood flow is supposed to be triple what it was before surgery so everyone in F55 had best watch out!

She was elected president of Orienteering Canada in Whistler this past month and will begin work in that position in earnest once NAOC2014 is over. What most people don't realise is that she used to organize triathlons on a regular basis before coming to the sport of orienteering. With Anne in charge we can all be sure that the event will go off without a hitch!

And the top reason to orienteer in Arnprior is...

...the chance to orienteer where International star Emily Kemp grew up and first learned to orienteer.
North American orienteering doesn't have too many super stars because it takes a lot to get that kind of level but Emily has made it through a ton of hard work, an amazing attitude, and a fair bit of natural talent. We in Ottawa also like to think that our great maps and terrain have something to do with it. Come to NAOC2014 and make your own judgment.
