I think my current matress is too soft and lumpy, it appears to aggravate my back. based on comparison with a futon, it seems like firmer is better. yeah, I tried the floor (with a thermarest) and that's probably a bit too solid.

anyone have experience with this or recommendations? I'm specifically wondering about ultra-firm regular mattresses vs. tempur-pedic types.

A good firm matress is a must if you struggle with lower back issues. Actually, what you really want is support, not firmness (they're not the same thing). Very helpful in this regard is ditching the box spring. A 3/4" piece of plywood will keep the matress from sagging in the middle. A really nice box spring will also do that, but the cheaper ones won't.

Having said all that, if you have the money for a SleepNumber bed, you'll never regret spending it. We got one when Kate was pregnant and I've haven't had a back problem persist through the night since.

We love our Tempur-pedic. It supports every part of you equally, so it takes pressure off what ever body part is hurting. Also, you don't feel anything when your partner rolls over (unless they also pull the blankets). Also, dust mites can't live in it, so it's great if you have allergies.

You just have to remind yourself that you will use this every day for 20 years, to help you get over the stickershock when you see the price.

And the price is...?

Well, the deluxe king SleepNumber which allows you to raise the head and feet independently for each person is around 4 grand. As Mary said, over 20 years, that's not too bad. We've had ours for just under 5 years now and it's showing absolutely no wear, so I think the 20-year projected lifespan is probably realistic.

If all you're looking for is the support and don't need the bells & whistles, you can get one for half that.

Spend the money. Were having some customer service person come over and inspect our divots. We have the pillow top. I think we should have went with Tempur-pedic.
