The 2014 Rochester Map Adventure is 12 days away (Saturday, May 31)! The deadline for pre-registration is May 28, only 9 days away.

Information flyer for the event:

The course-setters (Rick Lavine and Dick Detwiler) are very excited about the course for this year. We both had a lot of fun finding the "control" points (places to ask questions), and we're sure that meet participants will enjoy their outing.

We have 125 controls picked out, which sounds like a lot, and is a lot! This will provide people who don't expect to cover mega-mileage with the satisfaction of still visiting a substantial number of controls. More than 40% (53) of the controls are within a 1-mile radius of the starting location, for example.

For those who are looking for a workout, though, there will be one to be had! It is estimated that one would need to cover 32-35 miles to visit all of the control sites. It is extremely unlikely that someone traveling on foot will get to all of the controls, and this year (unlike last year), we expect it to be quite unlikely that someone can get to all of the controls (and write down the answers to each question) on a bike. This means that route planning will be even more important this year.

While you can register at the meet site, it will cost $5 more per person. Also, due to cost considerations regarding map printing, we won't have an unlimited supply of extra map packets beyond the number of pre-registrants, so if there is a large number of people trying to enter on the day of the meet, there is a chance we could run out. Thus, pre-registration is very strongly encouraged.

We've modified the procedure for registering as a group. You need to select "Group" rather than individual, and indicate how many adults will be in your group (there is a place for children under 18 later in the entry process). The important point to note is that you MUST choose the number of maps to be equal to the number of adults in your group. It may appear like you have the option to choose, say, a single map for a group of 2 or more adults, but in our meet we require a map for each adult in the group.

Update: We've moved the deadline for pre-registration back one day, to May 29 (10 pm EDT). This is because a local weekly newsletter is planning on doing a short article about event; the paper comes out on May 28, so we wanted to give any readers of the article who were motivated to pre-register another day to do so.

Hoping to come, maybe on a bike this time?

For anyone possibly interested, I'd encourage you to go. I did the 5-hour foot version last year. It turned out to be a wonderful tour of the nooks and crannies of Rochester, visiting places you would never know existed, at each one having to figure out the answer to whatever the question was they had come up with. It was a whole lot of fun.

Updated (and pretty much final) course notes are available at http://roc.us.orienteering.org/RMA_2014_Course_Not...

Anyone planning to attend should read these prior to the day of the meet. They include directions to the meet site, plus useful information about the map and the course.

A reminder, pre-registration closes May 29 at 10 pm EDT. You can pre-register at https://www.orienteeringusa.org/eventregister/c21/...

If you're registering as a group, you need to have the number of maps requested for your group be the same (or more than, if you have any need for additional maps for any reason) the number of adults in your group.

btw, there is an almost *EXACT* event the next day, between Akron and Cleveland, Ohio. Not well advertized on NEOOC website, but the full information is here. Last year's photos

Weather forecast is great for Saturday's event -- sunny and high of 71.

Pre-registration closes about 24 hours from when I'm writing this (May 29, 10 pm EDT). A reminder that you can pre-register at https://www.orienteeringusa.org/eventregister/c21/...

We have a total of 60 people registered so far!

There is a change in the course notes which will be updated on our web site soon; for now, here is the changed part, which modifies the previous policy of having every control worth one point:

"Scoring: 1 point for every control visited with the question answered correctly, minus 1 point per minute or fraction of a minute overtime. EXCEPTION: The 12 most-distant controls (control numbers 114-125) are worth 2 points each!! These are controls that are greater than 2 miles (straight-line distance) from the start.

Control numbers, by the way, are fairly closely correlated with the straight-line distance from the starting location; knowing this might help slightly with route planning, and it should minimize paper-shuffling (going back and forth among the three pages of the questions)."

This will be stated clearly on the map, and also the question sheet will clearly show the questions which are worth two points.

Pre-registration is closed, with 80 participants signed up. We'll have about 40 extra maps available at the meet, for anyone who hasn't signed up but who wants to participate.

One more urban Score-O event, happening on same day, is in Pittsburgh.

Rochester, Akron, Pittsburgh.

All in the same day. Map-based city events must be the trendy thing to do nowadays...

Wow that's something! Glad to hear they're catching on, I think they're a blast. Hopefully I can actually compete in an event one of these days instead of being on the course-setter end! (Although I totally enjoy doing the course setting part of it also.)

Wow, 125 checkpoints!

That's 4 times the density of a regular Street Scramble! Fun!
