With the newest version of Java, Or is blocked from running. The reason is because security settings do not allow self-signed applications to run.

I found a workaround posted on the java website. In a nutshell, here's what to do:
* Click Start>Java>Configure Java
* Click the Security tab
* Click Edit Site List
* Add the OR website: http://orienteering.ie/or/or.jnlp
* Click OK, accept the warnings, etc.

I discovered this the other day myself when Java updated. I also had to apply the same workaround to Routegadet and also http://www.tulospalvelu.fi if I wanted to look at any tracking.

Note that the address for the website you want to add is listed in the initial security message that pops up and blocks access

Any idea if this will be fixed? For Routegadget it seems like you have to do the fix for each club whose maps you want to see.

Alternatives:
- "Edit Site List" approach for all clubs. Annoying.
- at same security tab slide security slider down to medium. Then you don't ave to type in sites separately. But then it runs other unsigned applets in other sites too if you click run button of that warning message. Thse applets are runing in sandbox and should not be able to do any harm unless there is security holes in java. Commonly java is seen so full of holes that if you can't trust yourself not clicing run when such warning pops up at suspicious web sites.
- signing applet with valid certificate and repalceing it at all RG web sites. So those clubs hosting would have to make changes at their site and someone should buy certifiacte and sign the applet with it. Can't see it happen.
- no-java version of RG. That will happen, soner or later, most likely sooner. But It will take time until all clubs have installed it, so the problem will be there even after such feature is available.

If you're going to obscure that URL Jarkko, you should probably do it a bit more thoroughly. *goes poking around in Jarkko's code* ;-)

:) That blur was there to make it more tempting to figure it out.
There is not much there yet. Just a test to verify some things, and varified this will not be the way to go ahead (for some bugs in some platforms).

I used one evening to do that, it will take couple of nights more to smash the most essential stuff together.

I take it that's a 'no' vote for Leaflet? (I haven't played with it, myself)

Jagge:
No. Just need to implement some stuff a bit differently to make it work on mobiles and to preserve the retro look of RG better ;). I will use leaflet for sure, just because I haven't used it before.

For Juffy to poke with:

http://www.routegadget.net/rh/cgi-bin/rgjs.cgi?eve...

You should be able to:
- pan with mouse or touch screen
- zoom with button, pinch zoom or mouse roll.
- change language
- select class/course
- select runners (some known problems with ipad here and this element will be replaced anyway)
- view their route choises
- see split times as in a tiny awkward table
- view comments
- see legend
- mouse over legend (or tap with tablets) will make the route for that athlete should be highlighted
- mouse over (or tap) split time table should highlight route choice of that for that leg if person has route availabe (asterix in front of name)
- mouse over track on map should show runner's name as tooltip (plan is to shoe show split time too, now there is name + result), works also on android tablet with touchpad/mouse.

not implemented at all yet:
- digitizing/drawig route choices
- gps functionality
- animations
- etc etc

Data comes from this live site, you can chaneg event by editing url (replacing 7 with an other number).

Tundra/Desert:
When there is no-Java RG, will there be a path to migrate the existing events, perhaps as some static snapshot, no need to back-implement full functionality?
Jan 27, 2014 3:18 PM #
Jagge:
No need to migrate anything. This is just UI on top of old clumsy back end. Java version will not go anywhere. You will be able to draw your route with no-java and watch it with java if you like, or the other way around. Or that's how it will be at first.

Great, thanks!

I have installed JAVA version 8 and used the exception list in JAVA control panel to enable launching OR. Everything begins working and then JAVA shuts the program down after displaying the message “JAVA ™ platform SE binary has stopped working”. I can launch OR again and it might shut down or keep working. Windows 7 Home Edition.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

3 billion devices use Java, which means you are wrong.
