On such a control you need at least two tools working if not three:
A: Compass from something reliable - as close to control as possible,
B: Visualisation - what are you expecting to see ahead and around the control (and even beyond).
C: Pacing - if you paced you'd be able to get to the "zone of expectation" ie 1.I need to see it soon.... 2.I need to see it now..... 3.I should have seen it by now..... 4.Time to bail.....
If you apply say 30-40 double-paces (depending on terrain) per 100m and allow about 30m either side of control to start looking and to stop looking and bail....

then you need a relocation strategy.... :-)

See, I knew all that but did I think about it at the time? Definitely need to work on focusing on using techniques more. Good advice (as always), Jase.
