Golden Horseshoe Orienteering is officially changing its name to DontGetLost Adventure Running. DontGetLost for short or DGL for event shorter but our preference is to be listed as DontGetLost in results lists. :-)

DontGetLost Adventure Running has over 1000 members, 2 full time employees and over 600 kids in the Adventure Running Kids® program.

I never was a big fan of negative messages but yours seems to strike a chord. Good luck with the club's third name.
Besides the Golden Horseshoe area has long since lost its lustre.

Looking forward to a weekend combo featuring a Get Lost!! event on one day and a Don't Get Lost event on the other.

Perhaps in results it should be DidntGetLost... :-)

Is the change effective immediately, or on 01-Jan-2014?

I always thought HKF had a certain classy appeal to it (I love vintage). But, I have no idea of what the origin of that name was, other than Hamilton.

I think the club was named for the golf course.

The true story of how the Hamilton orienteering club came to be known as the king's Foresters: It all went back to when Jack Lee, Earl Phillips, Keith French, Steve Pearson and Russ Evans were little boys. At the time they were all in their different parts of the world big fans of the Robin Hood TV show starring Richard Green. It was as popular as Davey Crockett was in the States.
They idolized the Merry Men and longed for the life of Sherwood Forest. They knew Sherwood was properly the King's (Richard's) forest and not the forest of the evil Prince John.
So when the five boys grew up, became teachers and knew they would be running in the forest they wanted everyone to know they were the King's Foresters doing good and not the Foresters doing the evil work of the prince and his tax collectors.
It's a simple story, really.

There is a little bit of truth in Gord's second posting.

Jack Lee founded our club late in 1966 and named it the Hamilton Orienteering Association. A few years later the club made its first map of the King's Forest Park in the Redhill Valley and in 1969 the club was renamed the Hamilton King's Foresters.

But what few people know is that this forest was originally known as Sherwood Forest. The Sherwood forest was renamed “King’s Forest Park” in 1935 to mark the 25th anniversary of King George V’s accession to the throne.

So there you go - Sherwood Forest it was. :-)

In the thirty years after our club's first map the RedHill Valley and King's Forest were cut-up into two golf courses, 5 subdivisions and more recently an expressway. There is precious little forest that remains.

@shadowcaster: Yes the HKF name (and simple logo) is vintage. We don't plan any throw back jerseys" though at least one club member still wears his early 80's orienteering suit. Ugly faded nylon O suits aside, we are proud of our club history and the HKF name. In fact, the HKF name lives on as part of several of our Salomon Raid the Hammer races. You see we sometimes race on "vintage maps" in our Raid the Hammer races and name that section of the race "Vintage HKF". In fact, a few years ago Jack Lee spoke to the 300 participants about the history of some of those maps and the club. It was a great moment. But more importantly the HKF name is very much still a part of our club as a memorial to the late Keith French with our lifetime volunteer service award - "Honouring Keith French" (HKF) http://dontgetlost.ca/index.php?option=com_content...
