A+++ job on results so fast and on site!
More running F20 than F21? Progress!
Would it still be progress if achieved by attrition of F21s rather than growth of F20s?
Year: [2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2007 2005 2003 2001 1999]
#F20s: [8 3 2 9 5 7 4 2 3 2]
#F21s: [6 7 9 24 11 23 15 15 28 15]
[Mean, stddev] F20s = [4.5, 2.6]
[Mean, stddev] F21s = [15.3, 7.5]
2013 F20s = 1.3sigma above mean
2013 F21s = 1.2sigma below mean
Just also going to throw out there that a lot of the F20s were running up from the F16 or F18 category. cool to see juniors in the sport and doing well. I wish there were more F21s.
OK, I'll move this over to this thread:
All 6 of the medalists in F20, M20 (i.e., the national classic champions) were either coached by Erin on the 2013 Standing Team, or were coached by Erin on the 2013 JWOC trip, or both.
Three of the junior boys chose to run M21 instead of competing in M20: Ethan Childs, Matt Stout, Zac Barker. All three are both on JST 2013 and competed for the USA at JWOC.
Other of the juniors coached by Erin on a team who "ran up" instead of running their age category (and a shorter/easier course): Isabel Bryant (JST, JWOC), Evalin Brautigam (JST), Melanie Serguiev (JDT, JWOCTour).
Some new JDT members joined this weekend.
The female future looks pretty bleak. Here are the number of competitors in the junior classes: F18 - 1, F16 - 1, F14 - 1, F12 - 4, F10 - 1.
In the same vein, I noticed some issues with diversity on this event. While 6 out of 10 first runners on Red M45 could speak same foreign language, African –Americans were clearly underrepresented.
We need to design the courses less arrogant, more democratic, more accessible to runners of diverse interests and abilities. Instead of leg after leg of boring technical navigation, let’s add some excitement. Set a control on an isolated knoll in a dense fir forest with low visibility, no contours around, with a bunch of new unmapped rootstocks in the vicinity. Everyone will have fun!!
