Did any do the long leg by taking the track/road all the way up to the north, off the map (under the name) and back into the terrain up the big valley?

I considered that Minna Kauppi route. But figured I'd stay on the map instead. It was probably pretty comparable to the conventional routes, especially if you're a good road runner (I'm not...)

How important was the final climb to the last control and finish chute running speed in the men's elite middle and long?

Well on Saturday Serghei Logvin and Erik Kemp were tied at the 2nd last control and Serghei took 12 seconds off Erik on the tough ending of the race. Serghei's gold medal finish was extremely impressive after a very physical middle distance course.

Will Critchley then used the same strategy to turn the tables on Serghei in the long. Serghei had a 4 minute lead going into the final 1.7km and it looked like a double gold for GHO runner. But a series of errors and his lead was down to just 12 seconds at the second last control. Will reeled in 11 of those seconds on the steep climb to the last control and then took another 3 in the finish chute to take his 2nd gold of the weekend with a 2 second margin of victory. Another impressive finish after over 550m of climb on a tough long distance course.

I would love to compare routes in RouteGadget, especially in the Long. Some interesting choices, like 9, 13, 23, and of course 3.

I just noticed now that in the flickr set of images are the original competition maps. That is great. It saves me the trouble of having to find a scanner, or taking photos of the map with a digital camera. Now I have a high quality image to use with QuickRoute and my GPS track.

Route Gadget for the sprint is now available:

This is just one more aspect to the race made possible by the wonderful Valerie Meyer. GHO couldn't have (and wouldn't have) hosted this year's Nationals without her.

Another +1 for the awesomeness of Valerie. The amount of work she saves the organising committee and level of professionalism she brings to an event is incredible.

And it starts long before the event in the planning stages and especially in the final weeks as we work to make the registration database as complete and accurate as possible. Thank you, Valerie! :) Also big thanks to Sandy for her SI support on race weekend and an honourable mention to the magic Valeriemobile!

Special recognition to Valerie, Sandy, and others in the finish team who made the finish and results look effortless. We know the amount of work it takes to set up the display, and admire Valerie's continued willingness to provide her awesome service at a very reasonable cost to the organizers.

Thanks again to all the organizers and crews.

Speaking of Route Gadget can anyone on Sprint 3a get their RG to lock in on Control 2?

Yes, I just tested it by drawing the course for someone, and it went all the way around and saved.

All Nationals events are now ready on RouteGadget.

If you are uploading your GPS tracks, you will notice that your imported tracks end up pretty close, though you may have to do a little tweaking.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. GHO/DGL is full of fabulous people to work with, and they took such great care of Sandy and me during our stay in Canada.

So, why didn't anyone point out that there were no splits in the Long RG? :)

Fixed now and the animation should work correctly.
