Discussion: Race Info Update

in: 2013 Nationals (Hamilton, CANADA) (Oct 11–13, 2013 - Hamilton, ON, CA)

Hammer:
Course distances and info is here:
http://dontgetlost.ca/files/Nationals-courses.pdf

Note that we have 'split' several of the courses to reduce the length of the start window. Please check what course you are running on. Thanks to our friends at the O-Store your race bib will also include your start time and course info.

We will also be making some minor updates to the schedule over the next few days.

By request we have increased the middle and long training time on Friday. It now starts at 10 and ends at 2pm.

However, we will be imposing an embargo of the MAC campus from noon to 4pm on race day. As such race kit pick up at MAC campus will start at 4pm (not the 2pm time as listed earlier). Details of the sprint parking and arena location will be announced next weekend and info will be sent to all participants. Start times for the sprint are 5-6pm

ALL participants will be required to check-in at the race arena by 4:45pm for the sprint.

Showers!! All event venues during the Nationals weekend will have showers and change rooms available for participants to use.

More updates shortly.

Please check your information on the confirmation list to ensure that everything is the way you want it.

We've been getting a lot of category changes lately so I wanted to let you know that we can make changes to categories until this Tues. evening, Oct. 1. We need to give Valerie time to work her magic. So please review the course distances at the link above. You are welcome to run a course that is more difficult than your age category. For the Middle/Long, anyone may enter the non-championship Rec-Sport category on Course 6, which is the championship course for W45-54 and M65-74. The Rec-Novice course will be on Course 1, which is the championship course for kids aged 12 and under. Please write me at nationals-registrar@dontgetlost.ca with any last-minute changes.

If you said you were bringing your own SI card but forgot to enter the number, or if your SI number has changed since you registered, please let us know by Tues. Oct. 1. (See above re Valerie and magic.)

If you have registered for 3 races or if you are a junior, please check that you have given me the size for your free event T-shirt.

Instead of a banquet, we've invited a popular local food truck to our Expo after Saturday's Middle Distance race. "We will create a festival and expo atmosphere at the race arena with the Orienteering Canada Expo and Adventure Running KidsĀ® Fun-Zone. The Expo will include workshops, presentations, a silent auction fundraiser for the National Team and great food."

Please check to see if your family has ordered sufficient Expo tickets.

You can add extras (T-shirt sizes, Expo, etc.) by using our registration form. If you'd like to take part in our High Performance Program Fundraiser, you can make your donation at the same time.

Thanks for your help, everyone! :)

Btw, there are two people selling 3-race entries if anyone is interested. The Middle and Long distance races are sold out for racers over 14 but we still have availability in the Sprint. All registrations - and any arrangements to purchase entries - must be completed by the evening of Tues. Oct. 1. Thanks!

One other thing... I didn't put your special requests on the confirmation list for privacy reasons so if you have any doubts about whether you remembered to make an important request, please e-mail it to me at nationals-registrar@dontgetlost.ca before the evening of Tues. Oct. 1. If it applies to multiple members of your family or carpool, be sure to let me know all the names.

P.S.S.S. Please check your WRE ID on the confirmation list too, if you are running a WRE event and have a WRE ID.

Will using an SI-11 be ok?

Need any volunteers? ;)
Sep 30, 2013 7:17 PM #
Bash:
Myka, the event coordinator is Dana Ferguson at ark-brampton AT dontgetlost.ca. I have yet to be part of any event that couldn't use more volunteers. Thanks! :)

Cjross, I don't know but I've written Valerie to make sure she sees your question.
Sep 30, 2013 7:32 PM #
Bash:
Just conferred with Valerie, and we'll wait for Hammer to comment on SI-11 compatibility. [Edited to remove out-of-date info.]
Sep 30, 2013 7:43 PM #
edwarddes:
The same concern over an SI-11 also applies to SI-10s. The firmware has to be new enough on all the SI boxes for them to work.
Sep 30, 2013 7:58 PM #
Anvil:
I'm the guy in charge of this. All the SI will be\have been upgraded to the latest firmware, so will be SI 10 and 11 compatible.

Sharp-eyed observers may have noticed that as a result of last minute cancellations, there is now very limited space available in the Middle and Long events through the online registration form, which will be open until 11:59 p.m. tomorrow.

With one week to go to the race we have just announced the location of the "arena" for the sprint on the 2013 Nationals web site.

It will be located on the McMaster Track. Here is a view during resurfacing construction of the track last year. This is the view our announcer will have as he watches participants run down the final 100m straightaway to the finish.

NO SPIKES OR METAL STUD SHOES OF ANY KIND ARE PERMITTED DURING THE SPRINT

Here is a link to a map of the sprint "arena".
http://dontgetlost.ca/files/MAC_Arena%281%29.pdf

Yes just like Donavon Bailey vs. Michael Johnson in 1997 and the 2010 NAOC arena - this is a 150m finish line.

Awesome! Memories of NAOC2010.

There was a time in which the Mac Track was the second fastest distance track in Canada. (McGill was #1 but lots of rumours of it being short).

As a retired Steeplechaser, I'm looking forward to seeing the control description of the last control.

Memories of taking my small track team to the high school provincials (OFSSA) at the Mac track back in the 1980's. The radiator in my old Chev Caprice decided to overheat and I had to drive with the heat on in the car to keep it from blowing out the hoses, etc. The kids arrived in Hamilton well warmed up but a little dehydrated. Fortunately I was able to get the rad replaced before we headed back to Ottawa.

A low-res version of the "arena" map for Ancaster Community Centre (middle and long races, expo, OCan Conference, etc.) is now available.

ok, Ive been all over the event website - and maybe I'm blind - but can someone please give a link to an overall location map or directions to the event sites. The areana maps are great for close-in detail, but I'm not finisng any overview of the area.

Here's some overview info, Mike.

The race program is being sent to participants today
but there won't be an overview map of the area in that info. Instead we provide links to google maps.

Can I run unofficially, and/or collect controls?
Oct 7, 2013 5:41 PM #
Hammer:
No unofficial running will possible but we are always keen for volunteers to help with control pick up. Send me an email (jmw at dontgetlost dot ca) about your availability on Sat and/or Sun. Control pick-up will begin at about 2:30pm each day.

I stumbled across the start times. Looks like the sprint, at least, will be fast, furious, and great spectating, with everyone starting within an hour long time slot. The weather report looks fabulous, albeit on the warm side.

The race bibs (design and supply courtesy of O-Store.ca) are in and they look awesome! O-Store.ca will be at Nationals with all your orienteering supplies needs.

Due to venue restrictions at McMaster for the sprint the time available for registration is limited. Because of the nice weather forecast we have moved the location of sprint registration and changed the race access rules slightly (see below) to make registration less time constrained. However, please note that participants are still not allowed on campus until 4pm.

As of October 9th, we have made a change to the "arena" set-up for McMaster. Registration is now at the north entrance to the track. Also only participants on courses #5b and #4b (World Ranking Event) are required to be on the track infield by 16:50. All other athletes need to be in the "arena" area (track and parking area) by 17:00. To facilate a speedy registration process please bring your waiver pre-signed. If Friday sprint registration is busy we may only hand out race bibs and SI rental initially and request that participants return later when less busy to get their race souvenir and T-shirts and to settle any outstanding money situations. Thank you for patience and understanding.

I must be blind, but I cannot find any link to the waiver on the website. Under which heading is it located?
Oct 9, 2013 3:38 PM #
cwalker:
I got it in the 2013 Orienteering Nationals Race Package email.
Oct 9, 2013 3:44 PM #
Hammer:
@niall, yes all participants should have received that in their race package email a day or two ago. I'll arrange for it to be added to the website shortly.
Oct 9, 2013 3:50 PM #
mikeminium:
Just to clarify, is there any issue with arriving in the parking lot a few minutes before 4:00? Clarification please!
Oct 9, 2013 3:58 PM #
Hammer:
Please do not arrive at the parking lot before 4pm. Not only will you pay more because the evening flat rate kicks in at 4pm but we also agreed to be on campus only AFTER 4pm.

Enter McMaster off of Sterling. Turn right immediately after entering campus onto Stearn Drive. Follow north and direction signs to Lot H and Stadium Parking. Do not use the Stadium parking but continue to Lot H. See map.

Oct 9, 2013 4:36 PM #
Niall:
I have not received the race package email... I did get the Oct 1 email saying final details were coming, though.

Do we pay for parking at the lot? Is it a pay-and-display machine? (at which point making sure we have coins-only is best)
Oct 9, 2013 4:48 PM #
JanetT:
Cash or credit card, per : http://parking.mcmaster.ca/FAQ.html
Oct 9, 2013 7:31 PM #
Bash:
Niall, I've forwarded the race package to the ab438 e-mail ID that you provided at registration. Since it didn't arrive last time, there may be an issue so please let me know if you need it sent to a different e-mail ID. (Just click on my AP name to get my ID.)
Oct 9, 2013 9:00 PM #
GuyO:
Couldn't one just take Forsyth Ave to Michell Crescent?

There do not appear to be any pay stations by Lot H...
Oct 9, 2013 9:24 PM #
wilsmith:
There's a locked gate at the Forsyth Ave end of the lot - no access that way, and no parking on the street in that neighborhood.

There is a pay station inside lot H - I used it ten days ago.
Oct 9, 2013 10:14 PM #
Nev-Monster:
To warn you, the residents of Mayfair Crescent will not be amused by any attempts to park on their street.
Oct 9, 2013 11:41 PM #
jjcote:
And figuring out whether you can park on Mornington Crescent is way too hard. Even figuring out how to get there is inscrutable.
Oct 10, 2013 2:21 AM #
Hammer:
Ummm, yeah please take the route that I outlined above. Michell Cr. is one way in the other direction at the Forsythe/Mayfair junction AND there is a big camera watching.

Sounds like McMaster's neighbors are none too friendly.

Makes me wonder who came first: them (people, not houses) or the school...
Oct 10, 2013 3:37 AM #
GuyO:
@Hammer: How do you recommend getting to Sterling from Main St (from E, 403)?
Oct 10, 2013 3:52 AM #
Hammer:
@guy: as is written in the race info sent to participants the other day AND which is on the web site..... ;-)

"Turn right onto Newton Avenue. As this street crosses King, it becomes Sterling Street. Proceed on Sterling Street onto the McMaster Campus"
