Ken has made an impact far wider than the U.S. orienteering scene. In Canada, AP has helped orienteers, adventure racers and runners forge links within and between sport and geographic communities. I've seen countless cases where AP has helped people seeking gear recommendations, navigation tips, training partners, injury advice, travel information, a ride from the airport, a teammate, motivation, supportive words or inspiration. In our crowd, it's often said: "Attackpoint to the rescue!" or "How did people ever do X before Attackpoint?"

Congratulations and sincere thanks for all you do, Ken. You make a difference in the world.

Thanks everyone! This is a great and unexpected honor, especially considering the credentials of previous award-winners. Of course, Attackpoint would not be much without its community, which is you guys, not me! :)

All of the above and also for the occasional one to one, behind-the-scenes email Kenny has promptly answered for me - and for many others, I'm sure. Thanks, Ken.

I guess it was too late to actually be a consideration, but certainly Kenny's status as a super-groupie for Team USA at WOC this year is worthy of Silva Award points. :-) Go Kenny!

Congratulations, Ken! And thanks so much for AP. I don't know how I would have achieved so many personal goals, found out so much useful information, or "met" so many interesting, knowledgeable, and humorous people around the world without it! A very well deserved honor!!

Congrats also from one of AP:s regular European followers. You've made it possible to follow and keep in touch with orienteers all over the World. Thank you!

You guys are all too quick for me to keep up. I put information up about some of the background just recently. All this response to the Clubnet news shows, again, how AttackPoint works!
Jul 29, 2013 1:04 AM #
Juffy:
Of course, Attackpoint would not be much without its community, which is you guys, not me! :)

People form online communities around sites that work - the cost (to a user) of switching sites is so low that we're an incredibly fickle bunch. There's lots of sites that allow you to log training, but very few have developers that are part of that community and add features because it'd be cool, not just because they can monetise it.

The fact that AP works, has worked and is still working is entirely due to the hard work you've put into it to make it something that we like to use.

Awesome recognition for Ken, huge congrats!! Me being someone that found out about orienteering when I was far away from an o-club and had nobody to go to around me that knew anything about the sport, AP was a lifeline for me getting started in the sport and continues to be to this day. Many thanks for all the work with AP among other aspects of the sport and so happy to see this recognition for you!

Thanks for all you do, Ken. Because of AP, my fitness has improved, my orienteering obsession has been honed, and I feel part of something much, much larger. It's so inspiring to read the logs of really good orienteers and get motivated!

Your award is very well deserved.

C'mon man! Can we get a 'like' button, at least?

Seriously, though, congrats man. This was a social network that was around before all of the social networks. This is bigger than orienteering.

Congrats Kenny! Who needs Facebook when you have AttackPoint.

>C'mon man! Can we get a 'like' button, at least?

I suggest it be called a 'Spike' button. ;-)

My daughter calls Attackpoint, "Facebook for Orienteering". I pointed out that she got the order wrong, but she claims that calling Facebook, "Attackpoint for non-orienteers" wouldn't quite work.

Congratulations, Kenny.

Congrats, this is awesome!
I love AP, use it way too much, keep in touch with far-away friends, and snoop on what others are doing (my wife and I even snoop on each other through it... It's all good).
And AP was my source of a great pacer, support crew and hosts at my latest race. I didn't even meet them until the event but already "knew" them through AP :)

Well-deserved Kenny...congratulations! I'm sure it would be interesting to learn about the early days of A/P, and how you are able to keep it such a civilized meeting place, compared with many other sites.

As a closet-Luddite, I have to admit I came over to AttackPoint late; I was one of the last folks still posting emails to Mitch's O-Net on-line bulletin board that preceded A/P. For the late '80's and 1990's, discussions on O-Net could become every bit as interesting as some of our current interactions on A/P.

My daughter calls Attackpoint, "Facebook for Orienteering".

I rememebr kissy at one point describing Attackpoint as "Myspace for orienteers". That was before Facebook was a thing.

Way to go Ken - Congratulations! Awesome site, incredible contribution to orienteering, US, Canadian and world-wide.

Absolutely deserved - I was pleased to be able to semi-officially support the nomination, and I think it got support from other places too. Apart from anything else, I think everyone here can be proud of how civilised AP is as an online community - sometimes we disagree, sometimes strongly, but I can only remember one occasion, and that was years ago, when any discussion got into the realm of personal attacks.

I've even been known to use AP for work-related purposes - a few years back Cristina's account of a flood in Djibouti (not exactly the easiest place to get information about from more conventional sources) ended up being the basis for a section in that year's global State of the Climate report.

Congrats and well-deserved! AP has been fantastic for finding events and making new friends while I was on deployment and living overseas. And thanks to its' low bandwidth and relative obscurity, I've never had to worry about it getting banned at work :)

Adding to the chorus - thank you Ken! I think one of the major accomplishments of attackpoint is letting friends and clubmates who have scattered across the world stay close - as said above, social networking before it was a Thing. You've created a wonderful monster =)

I have looked at quite a lot of the various training logging websites looking at integrating with them with my Android app IpBike. There are a lot of them some of them with millions of dollars of VC funding behind them. They could all learn a thing or two from Attackpoint. It's a staggering achievement what Ken has done.
Aug 2, 2013 1:22 PM #
Gil:
+1. Similarly to what lfor did - occasionally I checked other available training log web-sites. Most of them offer many flashy and dazzling features that seem cool at first but when it comes down to core functionality for logging and reviewing workout log, performance of core functionality, how easy is to use core functionality I have not found better tool than Attackpoint yet.
Aug 4, 2013 4:36 AM #
Terry:
Echoing what others have said:
- Attackpoint was social media before "social media" was a concept
- Awesome core functionality
Thank you, Ken, for Attackpoint!

I know somebody who got into Harvard with an essay called "Why I'm on Attackpoint instead of Facebook."
Aug 12, 2013 3:07 AM #
chitownclark:
Yes, thank you ken.

But also, thanks too to the dozens of people who post comments, reflections, interesting daily happenings, and personal philosophies in addition to their routine daily workouts. They're the ones that make A/P interesting. Anyone who has browsed through other social media sites quickly appreciates the higher level of civility, commentary and intelligence on Attack Point.

To a great extent some of the most interesting personal logs are reflected by the Log Hits metric. So may I also express my appreciation to these people, who predictably have something interesting to say each day.
