Damian Konotopetz is flying to Europe for training with several juniors. Their activity will be recorded under this thread.
Good job at the Czech Champs! How much sleep did you get? Must have been hard to go from the airport straight to the race.
Yes it was very hard, it showed in our results haha.
Great results by Michael and I on stage 1 of the jwoc tour long distance. Michael 2nd! in H14A and I was 8th in H21E.
Fantastic job! Keep going strong!
The pre-JWOC-tour training was great. Tom was our guide and showed us some orienteering gems. We visited places with extremely difficult maps like Drabovna, and did just under 100km map training during the last week. I took it at my own pace, walking a lot of it slowly, paying attention to every detail and learning a lot from the most complicated maps I have ever seen. I would like to go to Drabovna again, but there may not be enough time to return. The maze was something I would not imagine in my wildest dreams. My climbing skills came handy in places :-) Thank you Tom for taking us there!
Very nice results at the JWOC Tour. Keep it up.
Amazing! Second silver for Michael on Stage 2 of JWOC Tour ! Go Canada go ! Damian was 20th and David 26th. David, you are recovering from that jet lag. Great job all of you!
Congrats Michael on a third 2nd place finish! And David you're getting lots of valuable experience in some tough terrain, keep up the good work!
Stage 3:
Michael 2nd
Damian 7th
David 29th
Stage 3 was the middle distance that had some climb and some rocks mixed into vegitation. I was a bit tired after getting the vaccination for encefalitis so I was not able to run up the hills today as fast as I would have liked. I made a small mistake at control number 9 where I los 58 sec. Hopefully I 'll do better tommorow on the last middle.
Nice job Michael, Keep it up!
Michael,

Thanks for the updates, and congrats on the good runs. Any chance of seeing some maps ;-)
If you want to see the maps we're running on go to Damian's blog

Now we are off to Olomouc, then HSH Cup, Trebon, Bubo, OOCup and finally, I am heading to Norway, while Damian will go to WCOC.
Nice work guys! Keep up the good performances - and more maps please ;-)
Nice work in Olomouc ! I can see that you are all working hard - 5 races in 2.5 days. The results spreadsheet was impressive. The competition looks really hot. Damian, I can see that Will is not allowing you to relax :-))) Let us know how were the swamps. David seemed to enjoy them way more than the dry land ;-) Well, everybody has their favorite terrain :-) The map certainly looked like a wet adventure.
The Olomouc training camp was great! Lots of quality time in the forest on some world class maps!
Nice pic, Michael. I hope you're drying out a bit after the swamps.
D-man, looking forward to seeing you at the WCOC's!
Bugaboospire- I think Will skipped some controls that training ;)
The swamps were cool! We ususaly do not have them that deep around Calgary. The last day in Olomouc we had a sprint on an old WOC map and Damian, Will, Michael L., David and I headed with my cousin to my grandma's house where we had a rest day, but only until the evening. HSH Cup starts tonight with a night orienteering race and will continue for next 3 days. Tereza's mom is picking us now.
Night race was awesome, first day of HSH cup was really fun!

Now that the HSH cup is over we will train for a few days in Trebone. After that we will go to the Bubo and OO cup.
Nice results! Keep up the great work and good fun!
The last few days we have been training around Trebon. A few sprints, contour O, and some normal forest orienteering where the European youth champs were held last year, some tricky rock detail and small knolls made it tough to navigate. We are off to Slovenia in a few hours for Bubo and OOCup! Maps look very tough! Stay tuned for how we are doing.

Will
Will has a fantastic documentation in his log. He records links to maps with his route drawn in, and detailed notes every single day. This is the best collection of maps and the best example of record keeping I have seen so far. Excellent work !!!

What are the field sizes for these categories?
M16 - up to 27 competitors
M18 - up to 35
M20 - up to 11
M21A - up to 17
M21E - up to 31
It can be slightly different in each race because not everybody races every day.
We should also give a shout out to Eileen Breseman from Cascade who finished 1st out 18 today in F50, and Charlie S. from ChicagO who finished 1st out of 16 in M60. These are great runs in preparation for WMOC.
One of the things that seems odd about the results is the lack of home country participants; hardly any from Slovenia. Anyone know why that is?
Slovenia has an estimated population of 2M, which is about 1/5 the population of LA County. LAOC has about 150 members. If there are more than 30 orienteers in all of Slovenia, they are doing better proportionally than we are.
What happened to Charlie on the sprint at Bubo? He was last on that race, but first in the other three!
I'm psyched about Ethan! And Will has a better finish place every single day!
Charlie has an AP log (soupbone).
He got confused at the map exchange---big time.
Bubo Cup - Stage 5
Ethan 4th M20
Connor 6th M20
Will 6th M18
Michael S. 7th M18
Michael L. 13th M18
David 23rd M16
Damian went to the hospital to have his knee checked. The good thing is that it is just a soft tissue injury, the bad one is that it may take 3 weeks before he can start running again.
Bubo Cup - Final Results:
Ethan 1st M20
Will 5th M18
Connor 6th M20
Michael S. 11 M18
Michael L. 14 M18
Looks like all 3 NA M-18s finished in the top half. In Europe.
Nice!!
Some other final results for North Americans at Bubo Cup

Eileen Breseman 3/18 W50
Ilona Dobos W60 (mp one day so no overall result)
Its too bad I have to miss OO Cup due to a knee contusion. Stage 1 looked like a lot of fun!

Would have been nice to run against Daniel Hubbman for 5 days! Looked like everyone had good races and some great results!!
Very cool terrain. I really like the style of course setting shown on this map. I'd be so lost.

It's been a great ride. Will and Michael L. travel to Berlin tomorrow, and back to the US on August 2.
Damian is going back to Canada on August 1 to race in the WCOC's while I am taking a different plane to Norway where I will be at an orienteering camp for one week.
is staying with our grandma for a week. Then my dad is coming to Europe and we are going climbing somewhere.
We had a fantastic time together and orienteered for 6 weeks non stop, with only about 3 rest days, doing on average over 250km per person. Now, I am really looking forward to Norway as I will have an opportunity to race against the best Norwegians in my age category. I may even meet Sunniva from our Calgary club who planned to participate as well.
http://www.hovedlopet2013.no/
Will returns tomorrow night, and I'm looking forward to hearing more about the 6-week adventure.
I hope Will will see you again, particularly at JWOC next summer and at NAOC next fall. Your results are impressive, especially running up an age group these past 4 weeks to compete against Will and Michael L. You are a force to be reckoned with.
Have a great trip to Norway!
Michael, Good luck tomorrow! It will be a tough race. There are 3 categories of boys and 3 of girls (14,15 and 16 years). There are almost 80 competitors in each category. Almost twice as many as you have experienced on the biggest races so far. Focus on the map and you will do well. Do not forget that it is all about the experience and the results are not that important. This is the first time you are running in the difficult Norwegian terrain. All the other kids have been running in it their entire life. It is quite different from everything you saw up till now and it is okay even if you come dead last. You will gain lots of new experience! Enjoy the runs!
Michael, I hope you will recognize some of the names in your category. There is Einar Melsom who ran JWOC Tour with you and then the famous Triplets you were trying to catch up to at NAOC 2010 - Øyvind Hjermstad, Erling Hjermstad, Havard Hjermstad all from Fossum. Sunniva Omdal now from Vaulen OK is on the list in the girls category as well. You will meet lots of friends :-)
Run well Michael! Looking forward to seeing your results!
Hovedløpet was great. I found the terrain hard, as it was completely different from Slovenia and the Czech Republic. It took me some time to get used to it. I placed 13 out of 79 in sprint (after making 1 min mistake and loosing 9 spots) and could have been 5th on the first leg of relay, had I not miss punched. Einar beat me and so did the triplets, but I was running much better towards the end as I was getting used to the terrain. I met Einar and learned that he is one of the best 14 year old Norwegians. He won the long race and his brother was 4th at JWOC. In the end I was happy with my overall performance and have some idea where I stand in Europe. I really liked orienteering in Norway and I would like to go there again and train there longer.
