While the 2014 JWOC Selection Criteria document is undergoing final wordsmithing and tweaking, the Junior Team Executive Steering Committee (JTESC) felt that it was important to get the basic information out to those anxiously awaiting it. We also wanted to make it available for discussion during this evening's open call (see details on the call below).

For 2014, the JWOC Selections Committee will choose six men and six women competitors to represent the USA at the Junior World Championships in 2014. They will also choose two men and two women alternates. The selection process will be based on a combination of JWOC Rankings and performances at Sprint, Middle and Long distance Selection Races to be held in April 2014.

The 2014 JWOC Rankings will be similar to what has been calculated for past selections (including 2013), except that Canadian A-Event ("Canada Cup") results will also be included. Also, there will no longer be a minimum ranking score (75 in past years) required for automatic consideration.

The first races to be included in the 2014 JWOC Rankings were the four West Point races of this past weekend. Based on the Planning Calendar, as of right now, it is likely that OCIN's Flying Pig XVIII (and, if approved, US Interscholastic Championships) will be the final event included in the 2014 JWOC Rankings.

The location and dates of the Selection Races, along with other pertinent details, will be announced at least 4-months in advance. As of right now, it appears that -- assuming their bid is approved -- QOC's US Individual (S/M/L) Champs will serve as the JWOC Selection Races.

All JWOC candidates will be ranked on the basis of individual scores, which, in general terms, will be based on the best three among their JWOC Ranking, Selection Race Sprint result, Selection race Middle result, and Selection Race Long result.

Petitions will also be considered by the Selections Committee, with submission information to be included in the Selection Race announcement.

Further details can be found in the final 2014 JWOC Selection Criteria document, which should be released within a few days.

Unfortunately the planning calendar is a little out of date: Mike Schuh, who updates it, is busy mapping at the moment.

The following modifications may be interesting in the context of this topic.

- GAOC is also bidding for the IS and IC champs for the MLK weekend in January 2014. This meet is in sanctioning.
- the OCIN meet is in sanctioning.
- QOC have advised that due to landowner permission issues, their meet will not be held in spring 2014, but may be held in the fall.
- ROC have a proposal for the classic champs for October 2014 (same as their canceled 2013 proposal) in sanctioning.
- the CTOC meet is also in sanctioning.
