Hammer:
47 teams of three braved sub zero temperatures and light to medium snowfall at this year's Giant's Rib Raid near Milton, Ontario. With the last two GRR races in +15 to +20C temps we were bound to get some bad weather this year. The Foreigners, led by Nick Duca, held off Hans Fransson and team GHO Canada GHO and Canada's top AR team (minus their injured captain) Supplier Pipeline, to win their third straight GRR in just over three hours. The lead changed hands early in the race but Nick (aka the Duke) waited for the other two top teams to make an error and they quickly jumped out to a 2 minute lead and never looked back. Team Beowulf won the coed category (3rd overall) and the QuantiGHO QueenBees won the female category (highest ever placing for an all female team in a Dontgetlost.ca Raid).

Course planners for this year's race were Mark Adams (on vacation in Hawaii on race day) and Chris Piller. The race featured a variety of navigation and running challenges including a run straight up the Niagara Escarpment on a very icy ski hill. Chris and Mark had teams navigating on a 1:2,000 map of detailed rock crevasses along the edge of the escarpment as well as racing on nothing but an air photo. Thank you to Adventure Attic for their support. Next year's Giant's Rib Raid will take place at Rocky Ridge - site of the 2006 NAOC. Mmm, I can taste those yummy burgers already.

Next Dontgetlost.ca Adventure Run is the Raid the Hammer (November 11) but check out the Tri-City Adventure Run in Waterloo at the end of this month:

A big thanks to GHO for a neat event! I appreciated all the hard work which went into putting it on. I think my favorite was doing a "lap" around a golf course, and walking up a ski slope - all in the same event.

Second that. In my limited experience, GHO has always put on great events. If anyone gets a chance, put these (snowshoe, hammer, and giants rib) on your calendar, they are very very very fun.

Great work GHO, thanks from team novarobot. Yay... not last place... good thing someone dropped out :)

Here is some GHO Adventure Run Trivia.

GHO has hosted 14 Adventure Runs since 2000.
(7x Raid the Hammer, 5x Giant's Rib Raid, and one each of the Night Raid and Snowshoe Raid).

5 different people have been on the fastest team four different times. Can you name them?

Nick:
my guess is take Doug out from there and have Giles instead.still flipping the coin hammer or tarno.. hammer was too many times the organizer but never know..

Hammer:
The five 4-time winners are: Mark Tarnopolsky, Hans Fransson, Ken Hawthorne, Nick Duca and Giles Malet. Who will be the first five time winner? For the record I've only been on the fastest team once but I've helped organize 10 of the 14 races...

>or some yummy Barbequed "Giant" ribs ???.

Mick suggested the same thing Nick. I like the idea. "Giant Ribs at the Giant's Rib Raid".

There is a point in any race beyond 20k at which I become absolutely desperate for a cheeseburger. If I knew there was a bbq at the end, I might pick up the pace a bit.

There was pizza at then end of this year's race, plus a small bottle of wine thanks to a generous sponsor. (Couldn't drink it on-site, though.)

More importantly, thanks again to GHO for putting on a top-quality meet with one of the most interesting courses I've run in quite some time. Good job keeping the temperature below freezing, too, or those marshes would have been deadly!

Are the course maps available to view somewhere?

Valerie posted our maps and routes on her training log - Vmeyer.

What would be the perfect race swag to accompany Giant Ribs?
I suggest a GHO Giant Rib Bib to keep all that BBQ sauce off my shirt. Hammer, build it and they will come!

And that's no Fib!

I liked the hats but if you want to know the best swag - a school bus would do nicely.

Course maps usually appear on the GHO website within a few days of the event.

School bus! Look for that at the Raid the Hammer this November!

I took a look at the maps in Valerie's log. It looks great. BTW, great details on the write up Valerie. The difficulty with the PB sandwich reminded me of a PBJ sandwich that made a round trip during an adventure race. Luckily I was riding behind my temmate (and wife) at the time. She only heard it.

One of the Raid's look like they might be worth the trip. Slightly off topic, but of the events GHO (or it's members) put on, which one comes most highly reccommended?

most of all, if you don't have much time, high majority if you do.I live close by , and if no date conflicts then even the minor ones i like to go. if not to train then to compete against them..they give you a fight for your buck

The Giant's Rib Raid (early April) and Raid The Hammer (early Nov.) are GHO's annual 25K team adventure runs. These events attract a nice mix of adventure racers, orienteers and trail runners at the start and end of each season. There are racers of all levels, with a very high level of competition near the top of the pack.

There is also the Navstock camping weekend of orienteering every June if you prefer individual events, more time to socialize, and fun for the kids. This year the Canadian national team trials will take place at NavStock, so the level of competition will be especially high.

If you're keen on snow, you can't always depend on having it for the Giant's Rib Raid like we did this year, so I'd suggest the new 3-hour Snowshoe Raid (solo or pairs, Score-O) in February. Check out http://www.dontgetlost.ca as the schedule evolves.
