Are now free for download through Natural Resources Canada. These are scanned images of 1:50k or 1:250k scale.

any hint how can be used the 'only 1:50 k scale for mapping, or is just to have "an idea" when one goes out ?

It would have little or no use for mapping traditional O-courses I'd think. The value would align with Rogaines and all the other activities Canadian orienteers like to enjoy.

If you are familiar with GIS, you can download what appears to be vector files of the NTS data here:

Possibly, you could integrate these with OCAD (I've never used OCAD, so I don't know). If you try this data, let us know.
