In addition to managing press releases for ROC, I have collected a smallish list of friends / acquaintances that have expressed an interest in Orienteering. They're not active, but I encourage them before events and get one or two to show up now and again.

I send an email out to myself and bcc them.

This is a note I sent out last year and again at the beginning of this year - feel free to pull anything out that you like.

So - it's March!

The first orienteering meet of the year is Sunday April 7 at Camp Eastman / Durand Eastman Park, starts from noon to 2pm.

But first - we have a new event this year - a half-day workshop. On Saturday March 16th from 8:30am to 12:00 noon we'll be at the Cornell Cooperative Extension next to Highland Park. Participants will either attend a track for beginner skill levels, one for intermediate levels, or a third for course setting. This "hands-on" workshop will build map reading skills and enhance skills and strategies for this exciting out-of-doors activity. It will include outdoor activities weather permitting.

Cost: Free to members of ROC. Non-member fees are $10 per person, $15 per family. All fees are fully redeemable towards ROC membership on the day of the workshop. See the club website for additional information, preregistration, and payment instructions.

As a reminder - for our "Regular meets" we offer different lengths and difficulties to challenge every outdoors-capable individual:

White - beginner - 1.5km [We do that metric thing...]
Yellow - advanced beginner - 2.5km
Orange - intermediate - 3.5km
Brown - advanced but short - 3.5km
Green - advanced - 5km
Red - advanced - 7km

The White course can be done by a skilled pre-teen in 20 minutes and generally takes walking families 30-40 minutes. We recommend it for all first timers, and offer a huge discount to go back out on another course - just $1 more (as long as time permits, so show up early if you want to do 2).

Membership is relatively inexpensive - and that gets you half price for the events. It will definitely be in your benefit to join the club. (Heck - we let the volunteers compete for free, so it is possible to participate for barely anything at all. Ask if they'll let you do that at the movie theatre;-)

You'll find an online registration for events at the club web site at http://roc.us.orienteering.org and if you're even 20% likely to come, we'd ask that you pre-register. This lets us fill out forms electronically (saving effort), and speeds your onsite registration. We do not collect the money - you pay at the event, and if you don't show up, it's ok.

And if you're one of those online-social types, we're using "meetup" to get people talking about the events this year. You can go to http://www.meetup.com/Rochester-Orienteering-Club and create a free account. You let people know you're going to go to the event, and can interact with others on the site.

Well - I hope to see you out in the woods soon. As always, feel free to forward my note to others who you think would be interested. (And I can add and remove people from getting these notes quite easily)
