For the gear head orienteers, tomorrow's (Sat) stage of the Tour De France finishes at Gerardmer, the host town for WOC 87. Sunday's stage starts there as well and appears to go through and along the edge of actual Individual (Classic distance) terrain up to the Col de Grosse Pierre, before descending to La Bresse.

Right on, Eric. The individual race (was only one distance then) was on the north side of the road, the qualifying was on the south side -- not that I remember this, had to pull out my maps and there is Col de Grosse Pierre. Had a nice inn at the col where I believe Eglinski, Meenehan and I enjoyed a pleasant beer on one of the rest days.

And Eric's comment got me to check my maps for 1986, from the French 6 Day that year, because today's route went over the Col de la Chipotte, and that seemed to ring a bell, and sure enough, I've got a map "La Chipotte." Just used for training, but I have a note on the map that was indicative of French orienteering at the time -- "bad map."

I wonder how many other O' maps the race goes by.

Haven't O'ed there, but a few years back we hiked the GR5 through a part of the Vosges. We stayed one night at the Col de la Schlucht and the next at the Gran Balloon. As the tour went by this weekend, our hotels were caught in the background. Would love to go back for more hiking or even some O.
