Pickle Juice

Pickle juice!

Former UD athletic trainer Darryl Conway, now head trainer at the University of Northern Iowa, along with Biff Williams, head trainer at the University of Texas-El Paso, are behind the latest sports trend--using pickle juice to ward off cramps.

"The stuff works," says Conway, who with Williams, presented a study to the National Athletic Trainers Association. The two trainers speculate that the pickle juice is effective because of its salt content.

The Philadelphia Eagles, by the way, recently signed a partnership with New Jersey pickle maker Vlasic, which also provides pickles to several other sports teams.

Conway mixes the pickle juice with Gatorade.

I've been known to occasionally sip pickle juice after a run. Even when I wasn't pregnant ;)

As for mixing it with Gatorade, I'll leave that for Tom & his buddy Conway...

Isn't the foremost Ukrainian hangover remedy pickle juice? I've heard it prescribed in this context.

Well, you gotta wonder: why don't they don't just add some salt to whatever they usually drink and skip the pickles?

Tex, email is bouncing back from your Yahoo address to me. I don't have the course anymore that you asked me the route choice question anymore, so either send me an image of the leg, or describe how to find the start and ending controls, and I'll give you my opinion.

Pavlina has been urging me to drink PJ for years. I usually just pour it down the drain. It's not just the salt, I believe the vinegar helps also.

Also typically have lots of sugar (unless they're dill pickles). I've got about 20 pints still left from last canning season, if anyone wants a try.

I've been drinking pickle juice since I was a kid (usually on the sly, right out of the bottle). It's great after a hard summer run, but for a real treat, try sipping the brine from a bottle of martini onions. (The martini after isn't bad either.)

I'm partial to corn juice. Like from a can of nibblets.

The day any of these pickle juice swillin', no good for nuthin' varmints from any state with a "t" can beat the El Supremo Sprint Commissar in a 1 km sprint duel after chugging a pint of their favorite hydration drink, is the day I will stand beside the opening of a dry, clean, shiny new culvert and not go in it.

Like any good "dealer," I don't actually take the stuff, I just try to get others hooked. (I have a huge stake in cucumber futures.)
