They did it. They smacked it good! Final images of the surface of the comet are estimated to be 2-5m res. Formed a nice crater and pretty spectacular plume. Be sure and check the funny papers tomorrow. Also you can check the jpl site for images. Hubble images of the impact should reach the ground by about 3 AM and will probably go out to the press tomorrow afternoon (on the 4th). Here is one of the first impact images from the flyby spacecraft. This is a snapshot of the screen in the JPL control room. The comet nucleus is the big grey rock looking thing with a small crater in the upper left. The impact is the bright, wispy thing in the center.

Your navigating skills must have been crucial to hit this extraterrestrial moving control with such precision. This is even better than adventure racing.

I'm afraid I had nothing to do with it! I was just watching from the sidelines. I couldn't hit a rock the size of Manhattan if I was standing on top of it. By the way, the Hubble images are FANTASTIC! The animations are going to be incredible.
