Thanks, that's a great start. Do you have club names? A fine HKF/GHO effort.

Will add the detail later this evening if nobody beats me to it.

Some more info, maps, results for all except 1973, compiled a couple of years ago.

1996 Oct 19-20 SLOC Meramec State Park
1998 dates Aug 1st and 2nd
But here's a mystery for you. Back in 1973 a story in one of the Ottawa newspapers reported that Ottawa OC was about to host the THIRD North American Orienteering Championships. Where were the first and second held? My guess would be Southern Illinois and Quantico but I don't know for sure,

upnorthguy:
I have an old article by Winnie Stott from about 1985 that reports 1971 as being the first; in Quantico (Prince William Forest). It even has a b/w photocopy of the map. Men's winner was Larry Long (USA). Women's was Laila Stark (USA). Ron Lowry won boys 15-16. Pam Middleton won girls 15-16. Don't know the dates.

upnorthguy:
On Gord's comment - if there was one in 1971, maybe the reporter just assumed it was an annual event such that 1973 would be the third.

I think you need to add a column stating who won each year (US vs Canada). Or is that just overly embarrassing for the US?
Oct 14, 2012 11:53 PM #
Hammer:
Considering the US went 0 for 1 in wars it fought against Canada (that being the War of 1812) I'd say that the US winning 2 of the 16 BK cups is a relative success. ;-)

Where is the like button.

AZ:
2002 was part of APOC 2002 Canada. The entire festival was a joint cooperation between the FWOC (Calgary) and EOOC (Edmonton) clubs. I think both clubs should be acknowledged
Oct 15, 2012 3:45 AM #
AZ:
1990 was a very similar situation - cooperation between FWOC & EOOC.
Oct 15, 2012 3:47 AM #
AZ:
2010 involved even more clubs. It was a joint effort between KOC (Kooteney), FWOC (Calgary), and GVOC (Vancouver)
Oct 15, 2012 3:48 AM #
AZ:
1998 I would guess was organized by SAGE (the Kamloops club). Don't recall if there were other clubs involved in a major way

mikeminium:
2004 was organized by NEOOC again. Same as 1980.

1984 at Sebago was indeed hosted by HVO.

Thanks all for details; and to PG for most dates and the good reading. Great that, that annoying void before the table got fixed/miraculously vanished - thanks.
Oct 15, 2012 2:44 PM #
Hammer:
For the right column... BK Cup started in 1980. Canada won that year. No BK Cup in 1975
Oct 15, 2012 3:03 PM #
NEOC#1:
Fixed, thanks. How is it figured?

Sandy:
Don't know the old scoring system, but with the introduction of the relay this year, there is a new scoring system detailed on the NAOC website.
Oct 15, 2012 7:07 PM #
upnorthguy:
I think your table still needs to include the very first NAOC in 1971 in Quantico.

I'm curious about number of participants, because this year's seems so big. From PG's data:

EventParticipants
1975, NEOCabout 250
1977, #4about 260
......
1996291
......
2000182
......
2008415
2010
2012694

My numbers are approximate as I tend to be fast and sloppy.

Why are there so many entrants this year? The organization and website have been just fantastic - does that explain it? Great PR?

Our PR and advertising has been deliberate, varied, and concerted.

We have used a variety of media, tried to insist on cohesive branding, and have not been afraid to spend money.

The number of European competitors (+Uganda, Brazil, Australia) is only part of the reason, but without the PR they wouldn´t have come.

Just under 100 "foreigners from abroad", ~500 NA Champs eligible and ~100 others (living in US/Canada but not eligible I guess)...

Great numbers, DVOA team. Excellent. Uganda! Must be a first for the US.

Sorry to miss you, Leif. Would have been fun to reminisce about Canadian O in the 70ies. I'll watch the feed from home and let my ripped Achilles recover fully

Yeah, too bad you´re not fit for fight. I´m at PEEC right now and expect to meet lots of other old friends though.
