Seriously, why wonder? You organize a fun race, which attracts good competition at the fast end and has a good atmosphere at the finish. It's on fun trails and for people who like running on trails, coming back for more fun next year seems sensible!
I can't empathize with those who don't come back. Presumably they have a misaligned sense of fun.
