RLShadow:
The Rochester Map Adventure will be this Sunday, June 10. There will be a mass start at 1 pm, and two time categories, 3 hours and 5 hours.

It is essentially an "urban rogaine", starting at the Cornell Cooperative Extension building in Highland Park in Rochester. There will be 61 "control points" throughout southeastern Rochester, including several parks, the U of R campus, the Mount Hope cemetery, and many neighborhoods. There will be no standard orienteering controls at the control points; people will verify they have visited the locations by answering a question from each location.

I helped Rick in a small way by checking out some of the control locations by doing a 2.5 walk, to visit as many locations as I could. Even though there wasn't the additional fun of having lots of other people out on the course at the same time, I had a blast, and I'm convinced that anyone who tries this will be very glad they did.

Rick estimates that in order to visit all control points, a person or team would need to cover around 30 miles. So there is plenty of distance available for those who might aspire to get all 61. I'll be surprised if any teams or individuals on foot manage to get them all, but I know there are some very good endurance runners in the area who may succeed in clearing the course.

But don't let the potential for 30 miles discourage anyone who doesn't run, or who isn't up for that much distance (not many people are!). When I did the check-out of a portion of the course, I didn't run a step, and only used half of the allotted time (if I had been in the 5-hour category), and I visited about a third of the control locations, plenty to feel a good sense of accomplishment.

Also, for anyone into biking, there is a bike category, which would enable most people to cover a lot more distance. But biking introduces a few other challenges, including a couple of parks where bikes are prohibited except for roads, and the challenge of efficiently carrying the multiple maps and answer sheet.

The pre-registration entry fee is $15 per adult ($10 for ROC members), and $5 for one or more children participating with a parent/adult.

People are strongly encouraged to pre-register, via Active.com; there is an additional $5 per person charge for day of meet registrations, if the number of available map packets permits. There is a small Active. com service charge, of which the club pays half and the entrant pays half. For example, for a 2-person team entry of ROC members, the Active .com fee paid by the entrants will be 82 cents per person. (Far less than the $5 extra for day of meet registration.)

The link to Active. com registration in the linked flier about the event (below), but I'm including it here as well:
