Are there any plans yet for something the weekend before NAOC? A couple of Brits are coming over before the meet and are starting to make their plans for when they arrive.

Thanks!

Should have a Central Park sprint the Sunday before. I've asked HVO about a local event on the Saturday as well, and will ask again now.

The Team is organizing a training camp midweek, too; you can find more information on: http://www.naoc2012.org/training/index.php

The training camp PDF linked there is HUGE (9+ MB). If you want a quicker download, use this link (compressed PDF, 1.3 MB).

Is the CP a hypothetical or could it really happen? I've never orienteered there...

If there is a CP sprint I would go to NYC just for that.

I believe the Ontario champs are the weekend before as well. On some really sweet maps too!

Oct 6 and 7 are Ontario champs
http://baleka.org/stars/events/20121006
not only that are 2 brand new maps- but also ( the 3rd) a similar terrain to what 2006 NA champs showed ( adjacent area). we could add also a training friday and one monday after if enough interest.. PLUS BIG BONUS .. the biggest Oktober fest outside Germany is happening in Kitchener ( used to be named Berlin till 1917 ) for about 10 days of festing and celebrations. and only 90 min- driving, or so, from Niagara border

and all 3 events are part of Canada Cup

Jeremy Colgan is working on a permit for the Central Park sprint. I expect it will happen.

I think QOC is planning a local event (their fall schedule isn't on the web yet); it's a bit of a trek but perhaps combining it with some sightseeing in Washington D.C. would be appealing.

DVOA will most likely also have a local event that weekend.

They're not arriving till the 9th I'm afraid, so Ontario Champs is out. It sounds good though!

Central Park sprint would be fantastic. Keep us informed!

I've already suggested they do at least two or three of the training camp exercises.

I'm also interested in some events between Ontario Champs and NAOC. Plan is to take the plain/bus/train after Ontario Champs to New York area. Other Belgians will arrive 13th october, so it would be great to have some possible races or trainings during my stay before that! Afterwards we planned the NAOC Training Camp. NAOC itself will be the end of my American trip!

I'm willing to re-run the USOC'72 at Pound Ridge mid-week before (as part of NEOC's 40th anniversary). Who does the coordination?

First I've heard of this. Is it an HVO event?

There had been talk about this as part of a local HVO event -- plus leaving the NEOC courses up during the week. The person who handles events in Westchester County (and NYC) is Geof Connor: ghckat AT yahoo DOT com

Would love a CP sprint and USOChamps re run at WPR, one of my favorite venues.
Willing to help if needed.

I just went to my map book for 1972 to look at the courses for the US Champs at WPR. It would be great to see some of those young hotshots running a course 'they way we used to do it'. The map scale was 1:20,000 and get this, we copied our course from a master map after our competition time had started - a feature some young gun recently said had 'no place in orienteering'. Kid; that's the way it was and accurtate transfer of detail was a skill to develop,
If you re-run the 1972 champs I hope you truly re-trace every step.
BTW the individual champs were a one-day event preceded by a relay champs on the Saturday

There have been re-runs of old championship (or similar) courses on a few occasions in Sweden.

One of those occasions was actually held as one of the elite stages at O-ringen a couple of years ago. Everyone knew the course in advance but still couldn´t beat the times from 1974 (?). So usually the young guns have not been able to fully match the times of the old masters... I don´t know if they also copied the courses from master maps though.

WPR mid-week before NAOC sounds interesting - I may be around for that.

While we are looking back I want to tell you about an interesting project that Flemming Norgaard of Denmark once put together. It was a race in 1986 for the IOF Congress to illustrate the evolution in map standards in the 25 years of the IOF.
The first two controls were on a B&W 1:40,000 segment typical of 1961. The next two controls illustrated a 1966 1:25,000 map where all woods were green. Next came a 1969 1:20,000 segment where thicker woods, typical of young plantations, were shown with a grey screen. The last two segments illustrated 15,000 scale maps typical of standards from 1975 and 1982. While the latter two had some differences in line thickness and colour combinations they would not look too strange to the orienteers of today. All five segments were on one letter size map sheet. Adding to the authenticity the first two segments used master maps before moving to pre-marked sections from '1969' on.
It gives me the idea that in 2014 when Ottawa hosts the North American Championships we should put together a similar project showing the evolution of map standards in the Gatineau Park where the first Canadian Championships were held on a black and white map in 1968, followed by three colour maps around 1972, four colours in '74 and five colours in the late 70's or early 80's.
Does anyone know if there is a program in OCAD that can produce pseudo-antique maps? Would a preliminary event like that interest anyone?

a program in OCAD that can produce pseudo-antique maps?

Well, OCAD is by no means antique - so if you want antique maps (pseudo or not) you still would have to make them the old way i.e. hand drawing on paper/mylar with old style pens (B/W). Scanning them for inclusion in a course planning environment is the least problem...

Woodbury Common is always super crowded. An official race would have to be held very early in the morning or in the dead of night. Even then you run the risk of conflict with delivery trucks, garbage trucks, street sweepers, etc. But what a venue!

Still missing a few pieces. Getting closer, though...

Just a reminder that the Ward Pound Ridge event on Saturday is ON. So, even if CP doesn't happen, there will still be O-ing in HVO-land that weekend.

For Central Park, there is a permit and a course setter. Details are being worked out for hanging controls and meet directing, from what I hear.

Hey everyone.

I assume the event at Ward Pound Ridge does not require online registration.

What is the status like for the Central Park sprint the next day? Perhaps someone can post a gmaps link with the exact location of parking/registration?

A week and a half out, is there any word on Central Park?
Oct 3, 2012 10:07 PM #
BorisGr:
The current word is that an official event in Central Park will not happen that weekend, as it conflicts with a big half-marathon going on there. I am discussing with HVO the possibility of making maps available to people with a course that is streamered and left there for a while. Will have an update on that in a day or two at most.

Scheduling and permitting is a lot of hard work! especially in major metro areas.

Wondering if the map and streamer option that Boris suggests will be available?
