All,
I just caught wind that the article on Orienteering has broken in the June issue of "Men's Journal" magazine. While copies are not on my local news stand, you can go to Facebook and click on the North Texas Orienteering Association's page for two posts from the NTOA.
Entitled "No Path. No Rules. The Wildest New Race," it features a photo of NTOA's Tom Carr, quotes from the orietneering community, and list 6 random races across the US this summer (NEOC, QOC, ROC, MNOC, RMOC and LROC).
Thanks to all that made this happen, especially Mike Minium and the folks from the Flying Pig & OCIN who accomodated the photo shoot....and for Tom who self admittedly made a poor route choice away from the control.
Have a good week.

OUSA
...they may also learn about "Orienteering"....
This is so awesome—keep them coming!
Awesome! Any way to see this online?
The NTOA Facebook page Glenn referenced has scans of both article pages..
All,
The only copy I have seen is the scan of a printed piece that is on Facebook. It isn't on newsstands yet.
I am going to put a call into MJ and ask for a digital copy for posting on
orienteeringusa.org. Will provide an update tomorrow.
Have a good night.
Glen
Great article!

Congratulations should problem first go to Nevin French (Ottawa OC and GHO) as it was his great idea to convince Alex Hutchinson to race with him in last Novembers Salomon Dontgetlost.ca Raid the Hammer. Alex is one of Canada's top mountain runners, a former top ranked Canadian road running, track and XC runner and most famous now for his blog 'Sweat Science' (and he also writes regularly for the Globe and Mail). Nev had the idea that if Alex enjoyed the race he would write an article.
Good on ya Nev! He did. Here is an interview with the author:

Good read! Thanks to all involved in making this happen!
Good job Nevin for generating the lead!
Is there any way to enlarge Page 1 to make it readable on FB?

Click the download link associated with the image to see it at the original resolution.
Or use your browser's zoom. All of them have it now (southeast corner).
Pink & T/D: Thanks! Both worked!
...though I have to go through the View menu to Zoom (IE8).

The money quote, for marketing purposes (I'll be using this).
Orienteering is the original adventure race, the granddaddy of the current wave of pseudo-military obstacle courses like Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, and Spartan Race.
"No gimmicks, no man-made barriers - just you against the terrain"
That was another good line.
Although, I don't know if that one speaks as well to the mud runners, since they enjoy the gimmicks, and they may not understand just how much of a challenge the terrain itself can throw at you.
Speaking of gimmicks, the
Color Run came to Seattle yesterday, and it sold out its 5000 runner capacity and was covered by all the major media. Basically, you run a 5k while getting covered in colored dust.
Oh god, awful but great pics.
Hutch was very kind by not mentioning me falling apart like no tomorrow during that race (I had a flu that was about to break out). My goal for the Raid the Hammers are to bring out at least one athlete who had never tried something like that before. These dudes are fast! Hutch went to a few World Cross Champs and Adrian Lambert to World University Games.
Note that the Adrian mentioned in the article is an old training friend of Canadian National Team member Will Critchley.

Why would you want to breathe that stuff in while running 5k?! Are people insane?!
(Great magazine article, btw)
Why would people want to run off-trail, through swamps and thick vegetation, over logs, and up and down steep hills?! Are people insane?!
5000 people just ran through colored dust (and paid $40+ to do so). That's 13x more people than our largest local event of the year, where the average person paid less than $10.
very nice! Love seeing orienteering presented as an adventure :)
Is Nevin the fellow pictured in the lower right on page 1, dressed in red? (I've IDed everyone else.) Bought a copy at the newsstand today.
not sure if Nevin did flying pig- where the picture is from
The picture is likely from this year's Flying Pig (Dan B and Ethan C in background). Reddish suit *might* be from BAOC. Or maybe not.
It is Matthias Eriksson wearing BAOC's suit.
I looked much worse than Matthias.
Flying Pig Registrar sezz...
Ethan C was not at the 2012 Flying Pig.
He was at the 2011 Pig -- and, as far as I know, it was his first...
(Though I've only been Registrar since 2010.)
>I looked much worse than Matthias.
Yes! Now I'm one of the most famous orienteers in North America. (after Tom Carr, Hammer and the other guys actually mentioned by name in the article) :)
Too bad the picture caption doesn't mention that I won that race. That would at least somewhat have justified my exhausted look. :)
Unfortunately Mattias, as I have learned after my years of fame and living in the spotlight, the attention sometimes becomes intrusive and tiresome. I put on a happy face so as not to disappoint the adoring public, but it is not always easy. I suspect Hammer and N. Am. orienteering's Godfather, ie, PG, might sometimes feel similarly.
