And so... ? You're not trying to tell me that anyone would have been planning to go to both in the same year? There's no way you can do specific training for both.

Hammer:
You don't think O sprint and AR Expedition are similar training? ;-)

I posted this because I thought it was interesting that the two Champs were at the same time and both in Scandinavia.

Oringen should be great training for the AR champs. maybe they will use e punch.

In Canada, Bob Miller would have been a candidate to qualify for both Champs - but he will choose the World AR Champs.

Well, gives me a reason to travel next summer when you knock me off the Canadian squad for 2006 Hammer. Too bad I won't be able to swing over to Denmark to cheer you on.

Hmmm... O-Ringen + AR World Champs... sign me up!

When you join YOA and start training with us, Hammer doesn't stand a chance;-)

Is a move northwards in the cards for Christiaan when he finishes his thesis then? Sounds like a good idea despite the limitations on O training during the winter - I haven't been but people do make staying on Vancouver Island fighting the salal sound like something of an elite orienteering career limiting move.

The north is looking more and more inviting these days; especially with great workouts that theShadow and co. are doing up there. Just gotta finish the degree which seems harder than any physical race I've conquered.

Strange that Vancouver Island is the home to the majority of Canada's top olympians and other sports atheletes, yet as you have noted Jon... it could certainly be limiting (oh hell... "death") to an elite orienteering career due to a lack of proper terrain. Tough decision ahead for me when it is a vertibale paradise otherwise.

Hammer:
To do well in "O" you need to live close to lots of terrain, maps, races and training partners - and unless you are really wealthy you need a job (thats why I sent you that Whitehorse job ad a few months ago). If you don't have a job then move to Sweden and get a job making meatballs or teaching Swedes how to play hockey properly - and do lots of training and racing. If you can't move there - then move to Harriman, NY. Pitch a tent on Surebridge mountain for a few months and train 7 days a week on some of the best maps and terrain in the World.

Good point Jon. Initially, I thought not being to orienteer from Nov to mid-April would be a huge disadvantage.

BUT I want Chris to come up here so ...More and more, I am starting to think that this is just an awesome place to be if you like to O. It was interesting talking to Katarina when she was up here because she comes from northern Sweden and was in a similar situation. She has obviously been very successful.

Pam said that we probably O more than most people (even if we don't do it at all in the winter) because it is SO accessible and we are on maps at least 4-5 days a week or more. The furthest I travel to a map is about 15 min drive.

We have more than 20 maps, most of which are fabulous. The other cool thing is that we really have a variety of terrain types.

Ideally, we should do a trip to a training camp in February or March just so we don't go into the first races so cold (pardon the pun).

Having said that, we don't actually live here because of the orienteering (well at least that's not the only reason). It is just a great community. Always lots of activities and events to do. A great arts scene. Friendly people....

Looking forward to seeing you up here, Chris.

Nev's Thesis versus the Pillar's, ultimate cage match.

Is the World Adventure Champs just be on Swedish topos, or will be an O map section do you think?

With the 10th or so straight +30C day in the Hammer - Whitehorse sounds awesome. There are many reasons why live where we do. Obviously I don't live in Hammer because of orienteering - I'd stayed in Sweden. I really admire theshadow and the other Yukon people who can train so long and so much without any races, that is dedication. I don't think I could do that, I enjoy to compete too much and need races to stay motivated. For that, Hammer is an ok place.

Reg Katarina, she did grow up in the Yukon of Sweden but she moved south probably about when she became a junior.

Pillert - if you are planning to go to O-ringen next year. Plan a few visits back home becaus eit is going to be rocky. Like a ridge. Seriously.

This thread made me start googling for places to live in the summer academic break if I end up with an academic job. Already by 1pm it's 86F, dewpoint 73F in Boston today (again)...

Well, Will, I'm not sure we ever got out of the 40s today. Though the little city (Laramie) may well not be your cup of tea.

Timmins, ON. Hometown of Shania Twain and the Underground Gold Mine Tour. The town of Porcupine is right next door, so be careful (especially in South Porcupine)!

I seem to recall from my days in that region that 'South Porcupine' is actually North of 'Porcupine'... what's up with that?

South west actually
