Summer has descended with a vengence for this running of the
Nipmuck. 90 degrees and bright sunshine (unlike the travails in Laramie). Note the inspirational quote from the Commissioner about 2/3 through the article. Hope he has survived the latest running.
I survived, but without distinction. Too damn hot (if it had been 20 degrees cooler it still would have been too hot) -- my favorite running temperature is about 45F! On the other hand, I think I was the best of the 4 orienteers there. Me 4:43 (a personal worst on the course by about 25 minutes), Jim Pugh 4:5x, Jeff Saeger 5:02 more or less, and Clint Morse DNF at 24 miles. Clint was right about with me, sometimes a little ahead, sometimes a little behind, to about 23 miles when his system shut down and that was that.
It might have helped to do some longer runs and some heat training, or at least one of the two....
But bad as I felt, others must have felt worse. Finished 23rd out of about 200 starters.
Well done!!! We have been thinking of you today as we have sat on the cool front porch (if 85 and humid can be called cool!). It would have been hard to get hot weather trainig this year with an almost record cold May. Still maybe next year - if you talk sweetly.
Too bad for Clint.
hey, I'm alive. Felt pretty good except for heat to around 22miles, then couldn't keep fluids down, was a little dizzy but the clincher came when I noticed I had stopped sweating - signs of impending heat stroke. Not worth going down miles from aid so I called it a day @ 24, 2.5 miles from the end. Not surprisingly, thought a lot about Gari on that last roadwalk to the aid station where I bailed. Gotta pay attention to your body & stop when it tells you to
