I have been watching the 5 day held in orange over the past few days and it has been quite interesting to see how the europeans did.
It also gives a good idea as to potential medalists for jwoc this year.
Olav Lundanes has been doing really well for sum1 who has only run in this terrain for a week, it is a good indication of his ablity i think.
Yeah you coule definitely see them up climbing the leaderboard as the week progressed. Lundanes will win gold, Saaren Bobach also be up there, he improved very well towards end of week. Czech guys not as impressive really. Norwegian girls were.
From what i saw lat year they are just impressive ;)
ya they crushed us Canadians and South Africans. the top junior orienteers in the world will figure out the terrain quickly
If past history is anything to go by, a lot of the Europeans have more trouble with gully-spur terrain where there's nothing to navigate from except contours (there were some spectacular blowouts from some very big names on Sunset Mountain at the 2000 World Cup). I don't think there's any of that in JWOC (although I could be wrong).
I'm fairly sure that the 'Dubbo' fire that is being reported in the news is nowhere near any JWOC areas (it's being reported as 'north-west' of Dubbo but I think it's actually north-east).
As far as indicators for the JWOC results are concerned, Lundenes was definitely very impressive, and the 5-days have done nothing to dispel my thoughts that Simon Uppill is a decent top-10 shot and a medal possibility if things go well; the terrain should suit him.
