Thanks Animal-O.

Here are some notes on the course, but first on the handicaps: The TOC website still shows last year's handicap system. There are two modifications for this year not shown. (1) Men in the 16 and under categories have the same handicaps as women in the 16 and under categories. (2) Men 75 and older get a handicap of 5. If you are in one of those categories, ignore the handicap generated automatically when you register. We'll correct it on the computer.

Conditions on the map as of Saturday am: There is no meaningful snow on the map. There is ice, mostly on trails.

The course will begin with a chase start of approximately 800 metres (flat) to the first control along a set route, much of it along a scenic trail. In effect, it's like 800 metres to a remote start, except that everyone gets to run instead of walking in the cold. The first control is at "Oliver's Rest".

The first box of 6 controls starts at control 1. The course is then point to point from control 2 to control 5, where there is a second box of 6 controls. The course is again point to point from control 10 and the finish. The second box covers a much smaller area than the first box, but with the entry and exit controls much further apart.

Duffins Creek runs through the middle of the map, with crossings of Duffins Creek being over bridges. There is a potential wet crossing of a smaller arm of Duffins Creek to reach control 6, but a direct crossing also can be made over a wide log conveniently placed near that control.

Finally, here are the directions to the start/finish: Exit Highway 401 at exit 401 (Westney Rd.). Follow Westney Rd. north. Turn left at Greenwood Rd. (6.2K), which is the first road after Taunton Rd., following the Conservation Area sign. Continue following the Conservation Area signs to the entrance gate. Park at the gate.

Remember to register by Friday.

Just one day left to register. So far only one of this year's top eight ranked runners has entered (no. 3 Serghei Logvin) so Sunday could be a big chance to pick up some of those valuable THOMASS points!

One update to the course description: With the colder temperatures expected on Sunday, all of Duffins Creek, the river running through the course, will be considered an uncrossable feature. All crossings of Duffins Creek will be over bridges. That has resulted in eliminating one numbered (point-to-point) control and a very short leg from that control.

How are the conditions there? snow covered icy?

rlindzon:
That's what I expect based on the weather the last couple of days. I'll provide an update on course conditions Saturday evening. Of the two big downhills on the course, one is down (or beside) a long flight of stairs to a bridge. The other has a range of route choices.

I found walking/running conditions to be somewhat better than a week ago. There's a very thin layer of snow throughout the map, including being packed down over icy areas on trails, which has improved the grip a little. Caution is still warranted, particularly on downhill trails. Across relatively flat fields, which cover a large part of the map, running conditions are quite fast.

Pathetic has taken the Garmin Forerunner tracks of 4 racers with various handicaps (Pathetic, Bender, 'Bent not taking his handicap points and me) and turned it into an executable where you can watch the race play out. Cool!

Thanks to everyone who organized the THOMASS TOC yesterday. It was my first official THOMASS and I will definitely be checking out others in the future. It's a great way for newer AR runners to get some experience with navigation by going solo. Well at least I hope it will help. :) I know Bash mentioned the THOMASS in her neck of the woods which will take place in a few weeks and I am curious to know what other THOMASS events are coming up over the next 8 weeks.

THOMASS Caledon is NOT to be missed. Perhaps the best terrain of the remaining races and most definately the best post-race food.

here is the rest of schedule

Chris, GHO / Dontgetlost Adventure Running will also be placing some checkpoints out on a map in the Milton area for the month of February. That gives you some good nav training opps on your own time. It is open to only those that have a 2012 GHO /Dontgetlost Adventure Running Adventure Card. Check it out: http://dontgetlost.ca/adventurecard

I was looking at the Dontgetlost AR Card yesterday and it's a great idea (and deal). Just registered for it and will definitely let others know. Thx!

Overall results should be up on the OO website shortly. It will take a little longer for the finish times and splits to be put on the TOC website because the TOC webmaster is on vacation.

The winner was Andrei Logvin (2 handicap), with Christiaan Piller (1 handicap) 11 seconds back and Sergei Logvin (0 handicap) 25 seconds back, followed by Eugene Mlynczyk (2 handicap) and Patrick Saile (0 handicap). Bash, with a 4 handicap, was in 6th, less than 2 1/2 minutes back.

Thanks, Ralph. Nice mix of handicaps in the top 6! Good Thomass Box design.
