Anybody planning on going to this? It was a lot of fun last year.
Maybe one of these years they will make it an "A" meet again. That woudl help draw me.
in practical terms, what is the difference? Great terrain and courses, great camping location. Pretty fine.
I'll (un)fortunately be in France, but highly recommended!
In my case, at least, the difference in A vs. non-A is that travel dollars are limited, so A-events simply get higher priority. Given unlimted funds (yeah, right!) or a paucity of major O-events, and it would probably be a different story.
Also, competing for A-event attendance in 2012, will be the first A-event in Kentucky in 16 years, Flying Pig XVI. Not only will it include 4-races in 3-days, but the opportunity to add a new state to O-resumes. :-)
If it was an A-meet, I would go.
I really like it, but when push comes to shove, that makes a difference when $s and time are in short supply.
There will be some from Seattle (possibly myself) that are going. It's a fantastic break during the middle of our really bleak winters.
It doesn't need to be an A-Meet. Similar to those folks who regularly attend non-A meet races like the Billygoat or Highlander, others will regularly attend non-A meet races with special terrain and amazing weather.
Also, for us out here, since most A-Meets aren't in our region, it's easier to justify going to Anza-Borrego because the travel options are generally better (non-stop flights, same time zone, etc.).
High of 14F in Denver today. A mid winter orienteering break in the desert (in unique terrain) sure sounds appealing.
I can say that Bill always tries to put on the very best meet possible at Anza whether or not it is officially billed as an A-meet. The club is always stretched thin, so the logistics are often imperfect, but the terrain and the experience always more than make up for that. I suspect that we'll look back on this event with fondness in a few years because whenever Bill decides to step down, this event will undoubtedly revert to a local meet with fewer extras (like blue courses).
A-meets are good if you like rankings and elite competition, Anza is good if you orienteer for the experience.
Oh, and Stan now has
online registration open.
One difference between an A-meet and not is that at least there's a sense that there is a standard to be met if an event is sanctioned. That would be important to me in considering whether to go to an Anza-Borrego event, based on past experience (if the terrain were not a consideration).
Planning on being there. After the last time, have wanted to return. You do have to watch out for the cactus but you can see all the contours!
Mine, too! I even registered.
Was there in 2010 - going back in 2012. Tickets purchased.
I'd love to attend this meet some day. It often coincides with local happenings, though -- this year, a two-day meet at Clements Scout Ranch (site of 2008 U.S. Interscholastics). And I'm registrar. :-)
