We are considering the following change to the format: There will be a single Tournament course, on the short side, at Stage Two. Both Division One and Division Two brackets will be seeded together. After Stage Two, we will make the upper bracket Division One, and the lower, Division Two (with the possibilities of jumping brackets after following Stages, as stated before). We will also honor requests to move to a lower bracket.

Course lengths will get progressively longer: Stage Two ~2.0 km; Stage Three Division One 2.3 km/Two 2.0 km; Four 3.0 km/2.3 km; Five 3.2 km/2.5 km (preliminary numbers).

It is not too late to enter! Come join the fun on two brand-new ISSOM maps (three Stages), and one expanded map (one Stage). Experience the newest proposed WOC format, elimination Sprint, yourself!!

Vlad thanks for posting- I like the proposed modification.
For anyone on the fence this is a really neat tournament.

I see my name for WRE but not for the tourney. Did I select something incorrectly when registering?

No, sorry, too much manual cut and paste, lost items.

If Stage One is a WRE, it is also an A-event race, correct?

If so, where are the age categories?
Nov 16, 2011 4:04 AM #
jjcote:
Does an WRE have to be an Orienteering USA A-event? It's not obvious that that would be the case. (And there's also the "elite meet" clause...)
Nov 16, 2011 5:09 AM #
Tundra/Desert:
All age categories are offered at Stage One/WRE. Age categories are taken at registration.

Stage One will feature four courses: separate WRE courses for Men and Women, a shorter Masters/Juniors course, and a beginner/intermediate course. These courses will earn Orienteering USA ranking points on Blue/Red; Red; Green/Brown; and Orange/Yellow/White, respectively.

GuyO:
Sounds good!

@jJ-J: One requirement for WRE sanctioning is sanctioning by the host federation. The only OUSA sanctioning is for A-events. Therefore, by default, WRE's must be A-events.

eldersmith:
Guy,

OUSA also does sanctioning for rogaines, which are not A-events. Don't know about other slightly non-typical situations.
Nov 17, 2011 12:55 AM #
Tundra/Desert:
Orienteering USA sanctioned rogaines are Orienteering USA sanctioned A events.

Rule 3.4.7, not that it matters, apparently.
Nov 17, 2011 7:09 AM #
GuyO:
Orienteering USA sanctioned rogaines are Orienteering USA sanctioned A events.

Really? Are rogaine results included in rankings, or even as credit days?
Nov 17, 2011 2:37 PM #
Tundra/Desert:
I think there is a slight misunderstanding of what an A event is.
Nov 17, 2011 6:34 PM #
GuyO:
Okay... That tells me that if the US/NA Rogaine Champs is an A-event, the Ski-O Champs and Trail-O Champs would also be A-events. Correct?

Pink Socks:
Are there any shoe recommendations or restrictions for certain event venues (ie no spikes allowed)?

Also, I'll be arriving Friday afternoon (landing at SFO at 4:20pm), so if there's anything social going on, I'd be interested.
Nov 17, 2011 6:49 PM #
Tundra/Desert:
I put the shoe recommendations on each Stage's page. They are a bit hidden, but the short version is, forest/terrain shoes everywhere, not trail shoes. You'll have less than a kilometer of pavement running for the whole thing. Mudclaws or similar should work. Dobbs/spikes are OK, I don't know of any restrictions.

Friday social mmm... I think I'll be too deep into printing Stage Five maps, but I'll ask around, and if people are interested, I'll post something up on the webpage or you can call me; phone on the webpage.

Whoops, I didn't read the stage pages that carefully. Thanks!

Are there going to be assigned start times for stage 1?
Nov 18, 2011 2:04 AM #
BP:
Vlad, to clarify-I should ignore my division 2 designation for stage 2- is that correct? Thanks
Nov 18, 2011 6:25 AM #
Tundra/Desert:
Yes indeed the times for Stage One will be assigned and posted tomorrow. It's safe to assume your start will be between 9:00 and 9:30!

Everyone runs the same course at Stage Two. Except for beginners/intermediate runners.

Tundra/Desert:
I posted a couple minor updates:

* Scale for Stage Three is 1:5,000;
* Slightly modified course lengths and climb for Stage Three;
* And I just found out that ISSOM requires 150 m magnetic north line spacing and this is too late to fix for Stages Four and Five.

Start list will be available in the evening. Control description size is 7 mm squares/60 mm overall wide, we heard from some that 5 mm squares are too small (what's on the map is 5 mm). If this is too wide for your holder, we will have scissors to cut off the unused Column 8.

Newest additions to the participant list above are Donatas Ereminas, Steve Gregg, Erika Kikuchi, and Mike Minium (tournament only).

A couple more things... a reminder that there is a 10% discount on everything at the Sports Basement store, today only, to Sprint the Golden Gate participants.

And an important note about Stage Three map: Some of the gaps between impassable features are as small as about 0.2 mm (that's what it looks like on the printed map—probably closer to 0.25 mm in OCAD). We are quite sorry about this. It is an area of complex geometry, to redraft which there is not enough time.

Pink Socks:
0.2mm.... so that's about a pixel? (on a standard monitor)
