Discussion: Corn Maze Classic and Sprint Champs are on

in: US Corn Maze Classic and Sprint Champs (Oct 25, 2011 - Sunderland, MA, US)

PG:
CMOUSA has just announced that it has awarded the 2011 US Classic and Sprint champs to Mike's Maze in Sunderland, MA. This marks a return, though of course with a whole new maze, to the site of last year's fabulous event, which saw the emergence of Greg Walker and JJ Cote as international corn maze idols. Walker is flying in from California to defend his classic title, and we expect Cote to also be on hand to defend his sprint title.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, October 25th. Yup, that's next week. Best step up that training. More info is here, and more will be forthcoming once we get permission from Mike, which is expected tomorrow.

Latest update --

1. We're definitely on for Mike's Maze, got the blessing this morning from Mike himself. This coming Tuesday, late afternoon.

2. Seems there is a conflict with the St. Louis event as to who is holding the Sprint champs. Excellent. Good for PR.

From an earlier AP thread -- "Fortunately, thanks to our CMO Course Setter and Organizer, our CMO champs bid will not come down to an 11th hour submission (and the dist will be sprint)." But their bid has still not been received by CMOUSA. So CMOUSA, still waiting, went ahead and awarded the sprint champs to Mike's Maze.

Negotiations are still possible....

3. Just out, the 2010 Corn Maze orienteering rankings, courtesy of JJ --

"As for my corn-maze ranking, you may be making a jest, but it occurred to me that with two events, I could slap the results from last year into a spreadsheet and apply the whole USOF ranking process to it, with gnarliness values and harmonic means and iteration and everything, so I did.  Took just a few minutes.  All races count for everybody, none are discarded.  My ranking is 89.607, which puts me in 5th place.

Well, it had occurred to me that it would be cool to include other corn maze races, but the problem is that if you have disjoint sets of competitors, there's no way to do any math to link them (and ranking a single race is degenerate). But then after I read your note above, I remembered that Sharon had done both the Massachusetts and Colorado events. So I added those folks in and ran the numbers again.

I seriously doubt that the St. Louis event is really going to be sprint length as was claimed, since sprint length for corn maze orienteering has a winning time well under 5 minutes. The right thing here would probably be for those guys to get their bid in ASAP for the Middle Distance Champs. If they've already ordered big trophies saying Sprint Champs, well, that's just poor planning.

Ken Walker Sr

The plan was to make it them the US Champs, but it seems like the work required -- forming a federation (RSOUSA), creating a logo, launching a website, developing rules, going through the sanctioning process, all in addition to making the maps, setting the courses, and running the events -- well, it seems like that might take as much as 72 hours, and there's less than 48 hours to the first start. So maybe next year.

Contact me ASAP if you want to join in.

* By my count over half the field are current or former national champions, and I may have missed a couple.

Meanwhile, in the interests of efficiency, CMOUSA's Board will be voting shortly on a proposal to take on RSOUSA as a subsidiary. If that vote is in the affirmative, then it seems very likely that the 2011 US Middle and Sprint Champs in RollerSki Orienteering will be taking place on Wednesday morning. Entries for it must be received by noon tomorrow. Stay tuned....

I figured there were at least a couple more but wasn't sure. List corrected.

Map and course notes

1. The map is black and white. You can go where it is white. Black is out of bounds. Contour interval is 10 meters on the north part of the map and 5 meters on the south part. The map scale is appropriate. Magnetic north is indicated.

2. According to Mike, the maze is in bad shape, with parts flattened by Irene and other parts damaged by panicked customers trying to get out of the maze and making their own trails. For orienteering, however, the maze is in fine shape. You can't cross the corn even if it has been flattened and is now only a foot high. And you can only go on the original trails. It's actually pretty easy to tell which they are.

3. There will be a map change for the Classic. You'll get both maps at the start, up though control 11 on one side, 12 to 18 on the other. No clues. Control codes are 31 to 48, in order.

4. The Sprint -- the original purpose of which was to give you a chance for redemption after screwing up the Classic -- has 6 controls. No clues, though clever folks will notice that there is a form of clues. Control codes are 51 to 56, in order.

5. First start for the Classic is 5 pm sharp. One-minute intervals. Red group will start last based on corn-maze rankings.

6. First start for the Sprint is 5:50 pm sharp. 30-second intervals. Red group will start last. We need to be on time because it is dark by 6:15.

7. E-punching. Remember to clear/check before you start. We will use start boxes. After the Classic, remember to download before you clear/check for the Sprint.

8. Panic. If you panic, and are tempted to call 911 on your cell phone because you can't find your way out, think carefully before you do so, because you will be ridiculed for the rest of your life.

9. Bring a map case if you can. Maps are 8.5 x 11.

10. Start lists will be posted in the morning.

It probably goes without saying, but I assume that the out-of-bounds rule means that one is not allowed to reach through or over corn to punch.

As for credentials, in order to qualify for the top-ranking position in the Red Group, one must presumably be able to prove that one is actually Greg Walker. Bringing three people to vouch for his identity, each of whom has demonstrated the ability to lift him with one arm, should suffice.

Great! So we are all set. And what a fine schedule CMOUSA has put together. Four championship events in a compact 6-day period (so what if they are in three different time zones).

Do these latest bids meet all the requirements of the strategic plan?

"In addition to the Corn Maze, your ticket allows entry to other "Fall Festival" activities at the farm: hayride to the pumpkin patch, animal acres, pumpkin launching, pedal karts, "redneck rollercoaster", petting zoo, etc."

Sure sounds like a party to me.

It probably goes without saying, but I assume that the out-of-bounds rule means that one is not allowed to reach through or over corn to punch.

Of course. Though I think you would need really long arms. Biggins might be the only one able to pull it off.

The classic is 1.5 km (as the crow flies), the sprint is 300 meters. For those new to corn-maze orienteering, any times under 10 minutes/km are excellent (assuming you have a decent maze.

Tthe Classic Champs are meant to be a test of navigation skills and endurance over a variety of terrain, whereas the Sprint Champs are short and fast and as devious as possible, a test of speed and cunning. Although this year's sprint will not be quite as devious as last years.

The weather is expected to be dry but windy. Might be feeling chilly with the wind, so come prepared.

From the intersection of routes 116 and 47 in Sunderland, Mike's Maze is 3/10 mile south on 47, on the right-hand side.

Distance from parking to arena -- no more than 50 meters
Distance from parking to toilets -- 25 meters
Distance from arena to start -- 0

To get to the party at Bub's, go back to the light at 116/47 and turn right on 116 (towards Amherst). Bub's is 3.2 miles on the left.

-- Marek on leg 3-4 in the classic, 22 seconds, next best was 52 seconds.
-- Sam on leg 6-7 in the classic, 38 seconds, next best 48 by the devious Phil, next best 1:03.
-- Phil in the chute in the classic, best time, really.

Meanwhile certain anonymous ski orienteers and their support crew are sitting here trying to do their Quick Routes, and I keep hearing, Oops, looks like I cheated there....

And then, Oh, there's another one....

Did anyone run a legal route? Or even close?

Note that under current CMOUSA rules, this is a just a matter of idle speculation, as there are no rules regarding going into out of bounds areas, nor any adverse consequences.

Except public heckling, of course.

Though I'm not saying anyone did that.... :-)

A draft of CMOUSA's version 2 of its strategic plan does address the matter of Trail=O Champs, but the timeframe for its development calls for the Ski-O Champs to come first. Though it is still just a draft. If there is enough demand for a Trail-O Champs from either the participants or the media, then I would think the Board would reconsider its priorities.

I'll note that the Sprint this year is almost certainly the race with the lowest GV ever: 0.303. By way of comparison, the GV for Blue at this year's Team Trials, on the Long day, was 10234. Those are not on the same scale, of course -- if they were, the corn maze sprint would probably have a GV more like 0.22.

Exposed! My track tells the story. On 6-7 I apparently went through the black between the H and I. On the finish, I apparently went straight up the R to the exit path, rather than around. Optimum ("legal") routes have been analyzed, and the official course lengths are 2561 m for the Classic and 454 m for the Sprint. The leg lengths on the splits page have been updated, and the optimal route maps will be posted tomorrow. (You're probably in good company, Phil -- I suspect that very few got around the Classic course without going through something mapped as uncrossable. 6-7 was a particularly tricky leg that requied going quite a way around, though I'm pretty sure that there were some "illegal" connections that were indistinguishable on the ground from mapped paths.)

By the way, the Google Earth image for the maze is from September 18, and shows remarkable detail. The flattened areas show up clearly, and it's obvious that there was wind damage through a good chunk of the map. Coordinates are 42 27.695' N, 72 35.048' W.

0700 Ken Walker Sr.
0702 Ali Crocker

0706 Greg Walker

The Middle is about 6 km (optimum route), 12 controls, almost no climb.

This will be followed almost immediately by the Sprint Champs just a few miles north in South Deerfield. The Sprint has an optimum route of 1.5 km, 2 controls and 5 questions, and is almost all climb.

Start order is based on the Middle results, slowest is off first.

Maps and results will be posted later this morning.

Current weather conditions are 40F, calm, overcast with a good chance of showers. And it is still quite dark -- sunrise is at 7:15.

I so need to move to Western Mass/Northern CT.

Hmm, that sounds more like rollerbiathlon-o.

it looks like 1-second GPS recording mode is the way to go in the corn. "smart" GPSs would never be silly enough to run in so many zig-zags.

LOL :-) although I have to wonder, given performances, whether some are juicing on fermented corn byproducts. Perhaps USADA should take note?

-- Sam on leg 6-7 in the classic, 38 seconds, next best 48 by the devious Phil, next best 1:03

I saw the split here and concluded that it MUST have been a skewed clock on the Epunch box. I looked at my split on the Garmin and it agreed, ~38s. Then, perhaps for the first time, I studied the map to determine the shortest valid route. The shortest valid route I could find deviates significantly from the adrenaline-filled orienteer's route. I *may* have hurdled a blocked section between the cubicles containing 'C' and 'H'.

I was using 3-second recording on my GPS, which was adequate for figuring out where I had gone, but I definitely should have bumped it up to 1-second.

Yes, Becky, move up here, then you can have good music times in Noho too!! =)

Rollerski-o middle was pretty awesome, having the details in the industrial park was fun, if the map was a wee bit hard to read (dark, gloom and roads nearly the same color as grass...). Rollerbiathalon-sprint-uphill, well, kinda can't believe I (nor Alex, nor Ken) could manage to count to 13... watch out Greg, we're going to train for next year by taking remedial kindergarten!!

Major thanks to PG!

I found that 1-second is the way to go for regular foot-O.

Wow! Mike's maize maze is amazingly detailed. Some of the corn stands in the face must have been very vague in terms of what is in or out of bounds.

Hope the USCMO Middle Champs maze is at least half as tricky!

Before the meet I guessed what the sprint course would spell when PG announced it had 6 controls. I was so thrilled to be right as I looked at my map I lost several seconds gloating...

It appears that:
a) this year's Mike's Maze is based on a potrait of Noah Webster that was painted by Samuel F. B. Morse.
b) Noah Webster is the guy responsible for the fact that we Americans spell things differently than the other English speakers do (words like center and color).

Shouldn't that be the honourable Noah Webster?

I was going to ask who it was. I figured it was either a dead President or Samuel Adams.
