Hello!

I'm 16-years-old girl from Finland and I'd like to come U.S.A as an exchange student on fall 2012. My favorite hobby is orienteering and I'd like to have a host family which has orienteering as hobby too. So I'm sending this e-mail to you and hoping that I'll find family which would be my host family.

My name is Lilja and I live in Raisio. I go to Aurajoki Sport high school in Turku and I'm member of our school's coaching crew. I'm also member of Turun Suunnistajat orienteering club. Sports is very important to me and I'd like to continue exercising during my exchange student year.

I started orienteering when I was about 6 years old. My dad took me to a practise and that's how it started. Now I'm compeeting actively and orienteering is a big part of my life. It has brought me lots of good friends and great experiences during the years. It would be great to be able to do orienteering in USA and get to know local orienteerers.

I chose USA because I want to learn English well and I'm very interested in American culture and way of life. I have studied English for 8 years now, so I can some English.

All the arrangements concernig my exchange student year will be done by one Scandinavian exchange student organization. My host family and your orienteering club wouldn't need to do any arrangements with the high school etc.

Here is picture of me. It's orienteering picture. I am a girl with orange and white shirt.

Please, I ask you to share my letter with your club members and inform me if some of them would be my host family during my exchange year. The host family will be contacted by the student exchange organization after the deeper discussion between family and me.

If needed, I’ll give additional information about myself and my exchange year plans with pleasure.

Thank you for your help in advance. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Best regards, Lilja Österman (lillifly AT hotmail DOT com)

She could train every day in Harriman. But even that could get old.

That is why you choose different parts of Harriman. Also go to some A-meets, local meets, and training camps. It never gets boring! At least, not in 4 years.

You could move to Peekskill, Bernie.

You could host an exchange student, Neil.

16-year old girl and single guy? I think the placing agency might have second thoughts. :-)

Bernard:
Yeah Neil. Especially in that new palatial place you just got. She could Jog over to Blue Mountain and train.
Even though I am 1 KM from Harriman, its still a 20 minute car ride or a hilly 1:30+ hours trail run to get to on to an O map.

You haven't mapped up to your front door Bernie?

eddie:
NJ lidar at Bernie's front door (almost).

Bernard:
Depressing. The Lidar data ends about 400 meters west of my house- just about dead center on Eddie's map.
That whole SE corner of Harriman is so underutilized. I've seen more rattlesnakes than hikers up there this season. (2 rattlers, 0 hikers).
I would gladly spend some time creating some sort of a map. To start, at least a rogaine quality one. Just need some base data.

JLaughlin:
Ahh yes, I love that area but it is a little far from WP (when I was there) and it didn't have an O map.

Did you perhaps see any lost cadets stumble past your front door this summer. They had some training in that area

One early morning a couple of months ago I was doing a bike loop thru Harriman. At the southern tip of seven lakes drive, I came across many cadets in full gear getting ready to head out. About 1/2 way into the park on lake welsh drive, I came across what must have been their destination. Several large vehicles and lots of first aid resources around.
Given the chance, I would have participated!

If I was there I would have suggested you come but I was involved with a different part of the land nav training.

Would you consider Canada?
