The preliminary 2006 end-of-year rankings are now available.

Credit days have been assigned.

The period is still open until November 30 to request credit days for being a meet director, course setter or other course worker for meet days you did /could not run on.

Please review the rankings for data errors - examples: two people with the same name on a course, incorrect age class, incorrect USOF designation, etc. The review period ends December 15.

An explanation on how patches are earned is on the main page.

Kent, Sandy, and I hope you have enjoyed the rolling rankings, and we look forward to having all kinds of new things to show you in the future.

"Kent, Sandy, and I hope you have enjoyed the rolling rankings,"

Of course we've enjoyed them! Thanks guys!

As for these "new things" - are the rankings going to get even more timely, such that they'll be updated *before* the event? That would be neat.

Thanks so much for all your hard work. The rolling rankings have really raised the overall quality of competitive Orienteering in the US making it possible to finally follow the progression of individual athletes over the year. I really like that you keep each update up so that you can review that progression later on.

For example I have been following the 2007 JWOC Team selection as the rankings progress towards the final cut-off date: http://thewaterstop.org/News/topic=16.html This has only been possible with the rolling rankings.

The only thing that I am dying to see is a list of each competitor's individual race day points like we have here on AP.

With Kent, Sandy, and Valerie at the helm, I'm sure that something like that is within the realm of possibility. Maybe you should ask Santa.

I don't think that OCIN had the rankings in mind while applying for sanctioning, but here's a wrench... there are two Sprints with A-meet sanctioning applied for on 31 December 2006. Personally I don't expect sanctioning to be granted, since it was a very late application. If they were to be sanctioned, it would probably be easiest if Clare would grant some kind of waiver for those to count for 2007, not 2006, EOY rankings.

To give more background—OCIN has historically put on a number of events around New Year, and decided this time to apply for sanctioning. OCIN has always had a tight planning schedule; this is not a beg for excuses, it's just the way we are. The Pig has flown for 10 years now, with hundreds of happy customers, last year's Relay discussion notwithstanding.

I am thinking of moving the Clever Event Name to around New Year's time 2008. It will be a long weekend (Saturday 29 Dec 2007 through Tuesday 01 Jan 2008), so almost certainly OCIN will put on an event or two, and it would be so starry awesome to see our ICO friends to finally get one together on the hundred or so km2 of A-quality maps they got.

The working title—sorry for lack of inventiveness or cleverness here—is the Frozen Pig.

Thanks, Cristina, John, and Clem. Either Cristina or John's future enhancement is what is coming soon...

Actually, if I read Randy's page correctly, sanctioning has already been granted. I guess being early isn't always a good thing.

Yeah. Sorry Valerie and Sandy. Maybe it would be in the best interest of all concerned to get an agreement and the word out that the rankings for the 2006/07 Frozen Pig will be for 2007. After all, the Sprints are the inaugural ones for the 2007 Sprint Series. Let me see what the other O-cinners think.

If the race is in 2006, it should apply to 2006 rankings. JMHO.

There's at least one (maybe *only* one!) local guy who wouldn't mind seeing this happen, either.

But, if they are rolling rankings, why does it matter?

As for why I feel the way I do (whether it matters or not), it goes back to changing rules too close to races (as we've had previous controversies on that score). I suppose its unlikely, but perhaps people have made plans to attend the races based on the assumption they would count in 06. I guess its more a matter of the prinicple of not doing that.

Sandy:
This is why we used the term "preliminary" ...

So we jumped the gun a tad and what's on the website will be renamed the Nov. 13 Rolling Rankings. :)

The OCIN sprints are in 2006 and we will add them in for the 2006 EOY Rankings. So if someone wants to get in 2 more ranked runs this year, head to the OCIN event!

But we would still appreciate hearing about corrections based on name spellings, USOF membership and so on sooner rather than later. The deadline for notifying us of credit days stands. (If someone anticipates being eligible for a credit day at the OCIN event, please let us know.)

Tundra/Desert:
Well, if the extra work in 2006 is not a problem for the rankings crew, then I stand corrected and there should be no reason to modify anything so that the OCIN races count for 2007.

Sandy, Valerie, and Kent, thanks a ton!! It's pretty hard following along with the US orienteeing scene from far away, but attackpoint and the rolling rankings help a great deal!!

Well, by the time those OCIN events happen, it will be 2007 somewhere.
