That is awesome, a great photo too.
Great publicity though I wish they hadn't implied it's the same thing as adventure racing.
Carl, I've been told that adventure running and adventure racing are two distinct things. Adventure racing is multi-disciplinary while adventuring running is only running (and navigation of course). I've made the mistake of mixing the two up and was immediately corrected by a good number of people :)
The impression I got is that adventure running is basically the same thing as orienteering (though maybe with less strict QC?)
the caption under the picture says adventure racing but in any case, it's still good publicity and a good article
My guess is that the caption is a typo, since they use "adventure running" in the article. Also, they used "USAO" instead of "OUSA", which seems like a strange mistake. But, nevertheless a nice article from a national-level site...
I really enjoyed the article, great exposure for Ali and the sport... but where are the proofreaders? "Commet" of the year? USAO?
Also, they refer to it as "foot-o", which I guess is correct, but it still sounds really weird to me in a published setting, so I can't imagine what it sounds like to the uninitiated. The sidebar also mentions trail-o and rogaine-o.
I think, as a community, we'd better embrace this "adventure running" moniker before the running stores (mentioned in another thread) officially take it over, because it sounds so much better than "orienteering". We could have adventure running, adventure skiing, adventure biking...
Yeah, I think the article is good. For outsiders, I think it helps clarify that orienteering is badass- esp with that awesome picture!
Props to eddie for badass picture, and to Caroline L for making the contact with the writer! Reaching out = really good!
Great article, and I am with Patric and Clem:
Adventure Running FTW !
Awesome Eddie getting the ESPN photo credit!
Legions of American Orienteers will now be adopting the low riser headband look.
And AZ will be found dangling from a rope... ;p
Yeah this is a good article and so cool to see an article focus not only on Ali's fantastic athletic achievements but also on her academic achievements as well. That is really important for young kids to read. Heck it is inspirational for all of us and I’m not just saying that because I’m a prof! Congrats Ali!
Now having said that … having the word 'foot-O' in the title is really unfortunate. Orienteering means very little to the lay person (and usually that implies compass games) and O means even less and foot-O.... well err what the heck is that.
>We could have adventure running, adventure skiing, adventure biking...
Lots of threads have mentioned this in the last month. When I have more time I’ll write a little history of why GHO jumped on the adventure running name a long time ago but here is an article from Bash that mentions a little about it.

Yeah, the foot-O thing grated on me big-time, but I am trying my best to be 100% positive on my comments on AP ;)
I like the term 'adventure running' - it sounds badass and fun :)
Nice article!
Adventure Running FTW !
Not thrilled with the use of "FTW". To a LOT of people the first thing that comes to mind is not "For The Win".
Luckily, for me, NOTHING [superfluous capitalization] comes to mind. I will go dust off Sinn and Bedeutung. I think Frege may have said something useful on this subject.
I suppose my ignorance of these matters is bliss.
...but I am trying my best......
Naaaah j-man....some of us like your intelligent, well-written and droll critiques. And isn't all of this uninterrupted praise a bit cloying? This melody needs some counterpoint. Please resume!
Not thrilled with the use of "FTW"
This is the interweb, GuyO. Most of us know what FTW means.
FTW, FTW!
Well, never fear--for better or worse, I’m afraid my penitence is fleeting. I guess that is another reason I eschew New Year’s resolutions. They are so boring!
As for melody…. I suppose one person’s Brahms is another’s Scriabin.
The original title didn't include foot-o. I guess the editor changed it because she thought the mystery of foot-o would get more clicks than the misconception of orienteering.
It didn't have the word orienteering in it either actually.
I suspect AliC insisted foot-o be used as the official ski-o term for orienteering.
@Pink Socks: Didn't you mean interwebs?
I suspect AliC would have insisted on the term summer-o as the official ski-o term for orienteering. ;-)
Whatever...we need more of this!
Yes, and by the way, foot-O or not, it is great, through and through.
Snow-o and no-snow-o! Although if we rollerski-o that gets confusing...
rollerski-o sounds confusing
rollerski-o sounds awesome
rollerski-o sounds dangerous
Let's try it and find out.
rollerderby-o sounds way more fun
yes! cool costumes required
And sexually suggestive nicknames.
All about the costumes for rollerderby. Confused about what violence is ok. I know you are supposed to aggressive on the derby circle but supportive off.
