Thanks, guys. I didn't realize he was so close to actually writing the article, he only just interviewed me! I'm feeling pretty famous today, somebody better make sure it doesn't go to my head.

There is a lesson for all here - particularly for those who moan about the lack of attention orienteering gets in the mainstream press, even in the specialized sports press.
That Alex would be named to the US ski-O team is non-news for orienteers. It is non-news in 49 states but it is newsworthy in Boston. Why? Because local papers and their readers like the angle 'local person makes good'.
All clubs, when they have an athlete reach a significant level, should make sure the local press knows about it. You can even write the initial press release for the papers and slip in tag lines about the next local meet or clinic.
It is far better publicity for your event than some kid getting lost overnight.
The second best chance to get local publicity is when a big meet - some sort of championships- is coming to the area. The Ottawa radio, TV and papers reallly ate up the fact that the COC's were there last summer but the key to successful publicity was that they had to be told and they had to be fed some angles - 300 participants spending money in Ottawa, local athletes predicted to do well in championships, Orienteering invades downtown Ottawa, The result: all the TV stations did news spots and the daily paper sent a weekend reporter out to cover the Sunday Long event. Its been a long time since that has happened in Ottawa.
Good job CSU! and Good luck Alex!
