Does anybody know of a good external GPS receiver that I can plug directly into my Garmin 60Cx. I need to improve my reception while deep in the forest/hills.

Thanks

What you want is an active-gain external antenna. I used to use one of these(discontinued) in my pre-forerunner days. it can make a big difference if you mount it on your hat or shoulder. maybe something like this or this; anything with an MCX connector will work, right-angle is probably better.

I use a Gilsson antenna velcro'd to a ball cap with my 60csx. Works very nicely. Get the 90 degree connector.

I generally get 2-3m accuracy in decent woods versus 4-6 average without. It's not going to work miracles in super dense woods under wet foliage or narrow reentrants. Improvement yes, miracles no. But they're only $20 and worth all of that and more.

thanks for the info. how do I compare the model listed by cmorse above for $20 verses the one below (which is the replacement for the one recommended by ken)for $60. Are they basically the same or is the $60 model better. Hard to tell.

You shouldn't need to spend $60, I don't think that one is significantly better.

28dB gain on the Gilsson, 29dB on the Amazon one - basically the same specs. If I recall the Gilsson one was closer to $50 back when I got it so it appears they have it discounted at this time. I can vouch that the Gilsson one I have is well made..

I use a Gilsson. Subjectively it helps, but in this game there's no proof. I never believe the "accuracy" that my unit tells me, what matters is the scatter when I come back over the same track. Tomorrow, when the satellites are in a different place in the sky. That's several times what the device tells me, not counting the occasional spasm which can occur now and again.
