Atropos:
Last year we had some people from Yes Mag come out to one of our city events. Here is the result.
The "Margo" who is featured is Louise Oram's mum.

Cute but I have to say that cartoons explain essence of orienteering very well with actual map, pictures of flags, how to use compass. Well done!

My daughter subscribes to this magazine and we were presently surprised to see "O" presented so correctly, even to have electronic punching shown! Although atropos called these 'cartoons' they were actually the full page size so a 2-page spread. We were wondering who they had talked to to get the info.

I'm going to have to take the pictures down for now. Magnus thinks that there might be copyright issues.

We can list the link to the magazine's website, though, can't we?

You can order a copy of the magazine here:

I'm assuming it's the Sep/Oct issue.

The illustrator who did the piece participated in the event and did the course. He got advice and explanations from Margo and other orienteers, that's why it is so accurate. Great stuff! I'd like to use it for promotion in schools and so on. He just came back to me and said ok for us to use it for non-profit promotion of GVOC.

I ordered two copies; plan to have one for my local club and one for the local elementary school (where the PE teacher does orienteering units when he can fit them in...).

Ditto. Shall every club get permission to use for non-promotional events from Mag Yes?

Yes Mag told me that from the end of October, the rights are owned by the illustrator. I contacted him and he told me that it was ok for GVOC to use the material for non-profit promotion. I have contacted him again and told him other clubs are interested too. Let's wait for his response.

Here is the illustrators reply:

As long as it's for promoting it to schools, etc, in non-profit uses, that's a-ok with me. The illustration file (OrienteeringIllustration.psd.zip) can be downloaded from the below link till the end of the month.

http://homepage.mac.com/hwoo/FileSharing35.html

If those individuals who are using the illustration could send me a note on how the illustration is used and received by readers, that would be be very nice!

Thanks,
~ Howie

This is by far the best educational/promotional piece for ' kids and orienteering' I have ever seen (in any language). My daughter really liked it so we just subscribed to the magazine.

Is there any way to see this? All I can figure out how to do is to download a zipped .PSD file, which I can't open.

The psd extension indicates an adobe photoshop format- I found this software - free and reasonable - to view it: http://www.xnview.com/

For MacIntosh users, the ap called Preview, loaded on most Macs running OSX, will open and display this .psd cartoon as downloaded.

Get the free QuickTime Player. Then you can see the page. I don't get any animation though. Is there supposed to be?

Not just for kids but for adults as well. I never thought about explaining orienteering in simple terms like the cartoon did when asked about orienteering; therefore losing attention of my audience pretty soon (it did not help that I don't have talent for teaching as well). Great piece.
